Afghanistan is a country composed of different ethnic groups, each with its own unique culture. The population of Afghanistan is around 31.6 million (as of 2019). Traditionally, the population is divided into more than fifty different ethnic groups, the largest of which are (in alphabetical order) the Baluch, Hazaras, Nuristani, Pashtuns, Tajiks, Turkmens, and Uzbeks. However, there are many more, including much smaller groups. Most of these entities, both large and small, have their own languages, cultures, and styles of dress.
Many people, especially in the capital, Kabul, tend to wear Western-style garments, but in the rest of the country, there is a strong tradition of wearing regional and ethnic clothing. Dress is often an important marker of ethnic identity, and people wear their traditional attire with pride.
Of the 31.6 million people, 51% are men and 49% are women. Approximately 7.5 million people live in urban areas, while 22.6 million reside in rural areas. Additionally, there are 1.5 million Kuchi people, who are an ethnic group traditionally engaged in agriculture and farming. They live in tents, and their places of residence change with the seasons.
Afghanistan has 34 provinces, some of which are small while others are larger. Each province boasts its own unique culture. Afghanistan is the only country in the world with such a rich tapestry of ethnic groups, each with its pure and vibrant culture. Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, has the highest population among the provinces. When you visit Kabul, you experience the essence of all of Afghanistan, as it showcases the culture of every ethnic group.
