Caddyshack hit theaters 46 years ago on July 25, 1980.
The directorial debut of Harold Ramis and starring Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight, Michael O’Keefe, and Bill Murray, Caddyshack followed a caddie at the snooty Bushwood Country Club trying to land a college scholarship while a slobs-versus-snobs war broke out on the course and a certain greenskeeper waged his own war against a dancing gopher.
Caddyshack opened at $3.1 million in just 656 theaters and went on to gross nearly $40 million domestically against a budget of around $6 million, good for 17th place on the year despite reviews that were, let’s say, mixed. The critics came around eventually. AFI now ranks it among the 100 funniest movies ever made.
Fun fact: the scene between Chevy Chase and Bill Murray wasn’t in the script at all. Ramis realized his two biggest stars never shared the screen, so the three of them wrote it over lunch. It’s still the only movie Chase and Murray have ever appeared in together. Bonus: Murray was only on set six days, and the “Cinderella story” speech was improvised from two lines of stage direction ⛳️
