Just when I thought I was done with The Barrel Leg Project... then these dropped 👀

If you’ve been here for a while, you’ll know this little series started last year because I wanted to provide visual demonstrations showing the variations of the barrel-leg silhouette. As a shape that’s still relatively new to a lot of wardrobes, I wanted to show that they’re definitely not all created equal.

Over the series, I tried reviewed multiple different barrel-leg pants across different brands, price points, washes and silhouettes, so you could actually see how each pair fits and why one style can feel completely different from another.

So naturally, when these landed at I considered it my duty to do a little market research for us all 🤭😂

I’ll be putting them through the same test as the rest. But in the meantime, would you like to see a few different ways I’d style them? 👇

Can we talk about this for a second?

Hear me out on this one...

I’m not saying a signature style is a bad thing. For some people, it’s exactly what works. They know what they love, they stick to it and getting getting dressed becomes second nature.

But I don’t think it should be the goal for everyone.

One of the biggest things I see as a personal stylist is people trying so hard to create a recognisable style that they stop paying attention to what they actually enjoy wearing. They get so caught up in creating an aesthetic that they stop allowing their style to evolve.

The truth is, your personal style develops by experimenting. By trying silhouettes you didn’t think you’d like. By wearing the outfit you’re unsure about. By changing your mind. You’re not going to land on a style that genuinely feels like you by copy and pasting someone else’s.

And you’re allowed to evolve. Your lifestyle changes. Your tastes change. So why shouldn’t your style?

I love seeing people wear their favourite pieces on repeat. I encourage it. I love a wardrobe that works hard for you. But that’s very different from feeling like you can only dress one way.

A signature style is amazing if that’s what naturally works for you. But if chasing one is keeping you stuck, maybe it’s time to give yourself permission to wear what you genuinely enjoy instead.

One outfit formula I always come back to is jeans and a top

Once you’ve found denim you love, you don’t need to reinvent the wheel every time you get dressed. The versatility comes from what you pair back with it.

One thing I’ve noticed as a stylist is that there’s often a gap between the tops we wear day to day and the tops that help us bridge the gap to those slightly more elevated occasions. (This has been a big gap in my wardrobe too)

I’m talking about the lunches, dinners, drinks and celebrations where a really casual top doesn’t quite feel right, but you don’t want to wear i.e dress either.

Having a few tops with texture, interesting necklines, the design details etc can gives your jeans a completely different feel. Suddenly, the same pair of denim works for so many more occasions.

It’s such a simple outfit formula, but it’s one I come back to time and time again because it’s practical, versatile and makes getting dressed that little bit easier.

As always i’m more than happy to share where everything is from. If you’d like the direct links, comment ‘LINK’

One of the things I love most about working as stylist is the variety of work in fashion and the opportunity to connect with so many amazing people.

Some days I’m working with personal styling clients, other days I’m creating content, hosting workshops, styling shoots or contributing to publications. I genuinely love getting to work across so many different parts of the fashion industry.

Some of you might remember that I spent four years editing the fashion pages for GT Magazine. And excited to be back at it for the latest winter edition for the House of Wellness publication The House of Wellness

One of the best parts is connecting readers to brands and pieces that I genuinely think people will love, especially Australian labels. It’s something I’ve always enjoyed about working in editorial.

Now onto the spring edition 🌸

(You can pick up the latest winter edition from participating newsagents and Chemist Warehouse stores)

The outfits I get most excited about are usually the ones made up of pieces from completely different style categories.

It’s called juxtaposition styling, and I talk about it every year because it’s one of the easiest ways to come up with outfit combinations you might not have thought of.

This look is a good example. A cosy knit with satin pants. One feels more casual, the other a little dressier, and I just love the contrast.

Ever put on an outfit and thought, Yep, that’s fine, but it still feels like it’s missing something?

That’s usually when I start looking at accessories. Jewellery is one of those styling details that can completely change the feel of an outfit.

One thing I hear quite a bit from women is that they love layered/stacked necklaces on other people, but aren’t always sure how to style options themselves.

If you’ve been looking for a little inspiration, here’s a look at a few necklace layering combinations from GIMME Jewellery _ to get you started.

One thing I’ve learnt as a personal stylist is that your outfit formulas don’t always need to change... but the way you wear them often does.

Your personal style naturally evolves over time. Mine certainly has.

I still gravitate towards lots of outfit formulas i’ve worn in the past, but the silhouettes, fit and proportions that feel like me today look quite different to what they did a few years ago.

That’s exactly what this video is showing. Similar formula, just an evolved version of the same outfit formula.

And that’s often where the biggest shift happens. A few updates can completely change how an outfit feels, while still feeling true to your personal style.

There’s good reason why you feel happier when you wear colour. It’s not a coincidence.

I spoke about this exact thing at a workshop I hosted recently , the power of wearing colour (aka dopamine dressing) and honestly, it’s one of my favourite topics to talk about because the psychology behind it is so good.

Wearing colour has been shown to boost your mood, your motivation, and your confidence. It’s not woo woo, it’s not a trend, it’s your brain responding to colour before it responds to anything else you’re wearing.

And here’s the part I always tell my clients, you don’t have to go all in. You don’t need a head to toe rainbow moment, unless that’s your thing and be sure to go for it) Sometimes it’s just a bag. A shoe. One colourful piece in an otherwise neutral outfit. That’s enough to shift how you feel. (a red ballet flat etc)

Never underestimate the power of a little colour 🫶
