Is there something you’ve always wanted to do creatively?
Write a book? Paint a portrait or a landscape? Write a song?
Have you ever thought, I’d love to do that, but I don’t have the time… I don’t have the right equipment… Now isn’t the right time. I’ll do it another day.
I can tell you that today is the perfect day to start doing something you’ve always wanted to do. There is no better time than right now.

This was the second painting I created after 20 years of exile. It marks both the beginning and the end of something. It says a lot to me. For “M. as Quixote”, all things begin and end with surrender.

“It wasn’t until I truly surrendered that I began to live again.” – M.

I never thought of myself as a painter. It’s not really something I chose early in life. I’ve always felt like it chose me.

I was a child of the ‘80s and ‘90s. I wanted to be an actor. I studied, I trained, and I was pretty good. The people I looked up to during that time were immensely talented, wonderfully flawed human beings who carried their own demons. I think that’s why I connected with them. Lord knows I’m not short of a few of my own.

I never chose this. It chose me.

And I’m so grateful it did.

New In: TV Head tee features a take on M.’s iconic TV Head Man. This piece explores the idea of connective tissue, thought, his time away from painting, and the kinetic energy of thought, all through the lens of what we see and how we see it.

It was a conscious decision to stop painting. I was physically, mentally, and spiritually exhausted. I was heartbroken, and the weight of my vices had taken its toll. At the ripe old age of 26-27, I decided to walk away. I can remember thinking, “I’ll never paint again.”

This hangs above my desk to remind me that, no matter what happens in life, to never give up on myself.

“The answer is always paint.”

When you look at a painting, what do you see?

Do you take in the whole image first, or do you notice the individual parts before bringing them together into a complete picture?

Do your eyes search for imperfections, or are you drawn to the tiny details?

Do you notice the movement, the texture, and the beauty of the lines that come together to tell a story?

As an artist, I naturally strive for imperfection in my work. Like all of us, I’m imperfect, but my art is where I can slow down, be intentional, and create something that reflects care, balance, and beauty.

Every person sees a painting differently, and I find that fascinating. The same artwork can evoke completely different thoughts and emotions depending on who’s looking at it.

So I’m curious…

When you look at a piece of art, what do you see first? What captures your attention?
