Close ups of the Complex Tee. Hand painted and printed details, and hidden captions.

This was such a fun make. I took it back to my TAFE days when we had time to experiment and play with different techniques, to explore and let the creative flow take over. This was my test piece but it turned out so good I had to add it into the collection. It’s also now online, link in bio.

I’ve collected quite a pile of plain second hand tees that need a new life, so I think I’ll make some more, what do you think?

Outfit 1 on the Tasmanian Fashion Festival Circular Runway for CIRCA was the Complex Tee and Plateau Shorts.

The Complex T-shirt is made using a second hand tee and handprinted, stamped and painted to create a piece of wearable art. A staple piece given a second life. A long life to come. Will you give it that life? Available now online.

The Plateau Shorts were once jeans, but the knees fell out so they were cut into shorts. Offcuts and scraps were cut into tassels and added around the hem to create movement and a point of difference. Again, a staple piece given a second life, albeit a little more extravagant this time round. Available now online. Click the link in bio.

That’s a wrap Tasmanian Fashion Festival

What an awesome weekend. Everything was amazing, thank you! I just don’t have the words for how spectacular this event was…models, organisers, photographers, event-goers, you were all amazing and I’m so happy to have met you all and to have been included. Can’t wait for next year!

The making of the Complex Tee. Why did I call it that? Because it is complex, many layers, colours, shapes and textures. An old garment revived, given a breath of new life, ready to relive for many more years.

Upcycling supports creativity in so many ways, sometimes I cut and sew and sometimes I print, stamp and paint. But every time, I breathe new life into an unwanted garment, saving it from the fate of living out its days in landfill.

It really brings so much joy knowing I am decreasing the effects of fashion on our beautiful environment. And this is something you can do at home with a tube of permanent paint or marker, to breathe new life into your pieces that may be asking for a change. Will you try it?

This tee will be showcased in the Circular Runway Tasmanian Fashion Festival and will be available to purchase online straight after the show.

Marking tools, making marks, by hand, off the cuff, letting the ideas flow in the moment. Not swayed by trends or influence, but following my own creative mind.

It’s easy to get caught up and overwhelmed by everything, so stepping back, away, escaping into a creative zone helps me unwind.

This print: success! I had a plan in my head and decided to do a test first so I wouldn’t ruin the actual shirt I wanted to use. It turned out so good and has now been added to the collection for Tasmanian Fashion Festival

A stain doesn’t mean it’s time for the rag bag, or worse, landfill. When did we decide a little mark means a perfectly wearable garment is suddenly unwearable?

This tee still has plenty of life left in it — so instead of throwing it away, I’m giving it a makeover, a reason to be worn again.

Worn definitely doesn’t mean worthless, it means creative problem solving (that’s basically my job when upcycling).

Have you got a stained tee you could get creative with? Dig deep into your memories and grab out that finger painting preschooler and some paint and you’re ready to give that garment a second life. Will you try it?

Rebellion looks like this!

Upcycling a pair of my favourite Kim Bailey - Sustainable Fashion Designer Educator Maker Artist jeans because I love them so much and want to keep wearing them. I grew out of these years ago and gave them to my sister, but then she grew out of them too and in true sister form, returned them to me coz she knew I’d want them back. So now they’ll live another life, meshed with another pair of unwanted jeans. I can’t wait to see how they turn out. They might even make it onto the runway Tasmanian Fashion Festival 👖
