The ReDress Hub: keeping it circular

The ReDress Hub: keeping it circular The ReDress Hub helps you to keep clothing (& textiles) in use for longer through creativity and fun

The clothing industry is the second biggest polluter after the oil industry in the world and accounts for 10% of global carbon emissions (Conca, J., 2015, Forbes). From the harvesting of raw materials; its refinement into fibres and threads; the dyeing, knitting and weaving into fabrics; the preparation and manufacturing into clothes; the packaging and distribution into retail stores; the wear and

laundering and finally the discard and waste, at every stage in this life cycle, the fashion industry can boast detrimental environmental and social impacts. In Australia close to 800,000 tonnes of clothes and textiles end up in landfill each year (Kollmorgen, A. 2021, Choice). On average, fast fashion garments are worn less than five times and kept for around 35 days. This produces 400% more carbon emissions per item per year than garments worn 50 times and kept for a full year (Conca, J., 2015, Forbes). While producing new sustainable lines of clothing across the entire life cycle is the ultimate solution, there are already in circulation a plethora of clothes and textiles that can be reused. By reusing clothing and textiles, the impacts at the higher end of the production process are kept to a minimum or negated all together and at the lower end of the cycle over consumption and unnecessary waste are vastly reduced (Ellen Macarthur Foundation n.d.). These are the major principles for the circular economy by keeping ‘stuff’ in use for longer to:
• eliminate waste and pollutions,
• circulate products and materials (at their highest value) and
• regenerate nature. For the clothing industry this involves business models that circulate products and materials within the economy through:
• Resale
• Repair
• Remaking
• Rental

ReDress is a hub space – actual and virtual – for local clothing retailers, service providers, designers and consumers to collaborate in the use, reuse, restyling, sharing and repair of clothing, to disrupt excessive consumption behaviours and reduce waste to landfill of clothing within regional centres. ReDress aims to keep clothes and textiles in use for longer through education, consulting and reused product. ReDress supports local economies and businesses by utilizing only local resources wherever a prospect exists, or further creating an opportunity if not. As a social enterprise business, profits will be put towards local projects and initiatives that further the principles of ReDress and a localised circular clothing economy.

This hand knitted woollen jumper was knitted by Kirsty’s Mum, sometime in the late 1970’s- early 1980’s.

But over time it had started to discolour getting those annoying brown age spots on it so she no longer wore it and plus the cream colour no longer suited her.

Kirsty’s Mum passed a long time ago, so this piece is precious to her. What to do? Due it? Cut it up to make something else from it? Embroider a design over the discolouration?

In the end she decided to do the least changes to it and using a Swiss darning technique has darned over the top of the brown stains, letting these marks guide the design.

She also unravelled and reknitted the neck in a matching blue to better suit her facial colouring matching this with the cuffs - although she now wants to add length to these as a little short.

In the end she’s really happy with her jumper as she now wears it again, a beautiful memory of her Mum and honouring the hours of knitting she originally put into it. It’s also deliciously warm!!!

Do you have old knitwear you’re not sure what to do with? Perhaps Kirsty may have some ideas for you! Come in to The ReDress Hub with your garment to chat about some ideas!

Anders come in today for our monthly Mending Table with a small but annoying hole in his jumper.

Today with the help of a ReDress Angel, he has made this beautiful orange woven patch to cover and secure it! For his first attempt at darning he’s done an amazing job!! 👏💕🧵

Anders is going to use his new skill to mend other clothes, particularly socks!

We also had Rachel take up hems on her pants and Victoria adjusted the sizing of her skirt. A busy Mending Table today!

Our Mending Table workshops are the first Saturday of the month at The ReDress Hub so our next one will be August 1st. What do you have in your wardrobe you’re not wearing because it needs a minor repair or adjusting?

Book your place at our next Mending Table through Eventbrite by clicking on the link in our Bio. $10/hour or $25 for 3 hours and our ReGift Program is available for those who are feeling a financial pinch atm. Just ask us about ReGift before booking your ticket.

This stunning partial roll of vintage Japanese silk came into The ReDress Hub this week.

Traditionally used to make kimonos we also feel it can have more modern applications. A soft peachy pink with a very subtle yellow highlight, this would make a very pretty scarf or pieced together to create a flowy and elegant blouse. Priced at $7.50/m.

What could you create from this? Let us know by posting below!

The next of Kirsty’s upcycled jumpers is here!

Made from an op shop find, this previously ordinary jumper has been given a new and exciting life using yarn leftovers.

Cut in half the bottom section has been completely re-knitted but in keeping with the ribbing of the original jumper. The ribbing now half the length. The sleeves have been extended using crochet to also create an interesting open form and the base of the jumper also finished with crochet.

Added colour on the neck and sleeves has been achieved using a Swiss darning technique.

This jumper is a size S-M and a complete transformation with many hours of design decisions, unravelling, knitting, crochet and darning which is why it is priced at $250.

Hoping she finds a special person for her to be worn, loved and adored!! 🧶💕

With thanks to Brie for being such an amazing model…!! 👏👏👏

Such a great morning at The ReDress Hub with these wonderful women from the Australian Red Cross, taking a workshop to start learning the skills of sewing by making a drawstring bag.

Their smiles say it all!

This workshop was made possible from a City of Launceston Official Community Grant provided to The ReDress Hub to subsidise workshop spaces for those financially vulnerable in our community, the ReGift Program.

The ReGift Program is also available at all of our organised workshops, please get in touch with us if you are interested.

Congratulations to all of these amazing women today!
