Today Hugo turns 8.

Like many parents, birthdays are a big milestone… but for us, they don’t look like the typical parties you might picture.

There’s no loud singing of happy birthday.
No big crowded rooms.
No overwhelming decorations or noise.

Because for Hugo those things can feel intense, confusing, and sometimes even distressing.
But what we do have is something just as powerful.

We have love.
We have patience.
We have understanding.

We have moments that are quieter, but deeper.
We celebrate in ways that feel safe for him
And in those moments… you see the magic.

You see his intelligence.
His creativity.
His beautiful memory.
His unique way of seeing the world.

Birthdays for neurodivergent children can look different and that’s okay.

Different doesn’t mean less special.
Different doesn’t mean less joyful.
Different doesn’t mean less love.

If anything, it means we learn to love in ways that are more intentional, more patient, and more human.

So today, we celebrate you mate.

Exactly as you are.
You are kind.
You are brilliant.
You are funny.
You are deeply loved.

And you are teaching all of us how to see the world a little differently and a little better.

As we navigate our world with Hugo we’ve learned lots of ways to enjoy the things we used to love doing, differently.

Although still not very often, heading out to a restaurant or winery is something we love to do and something that Ryan craves. She’s always asking if we can go out and eat more often. So when we do we go prepared - we call ahead and ask for a more appropriate table in a quieter area, take all of his favourite toys and activities and hope for the best! Sometimes it doesn’t work and sometimes it does. Today was one of those days that just worked and we all enjoyed it!
