This is 5️⃣0️⃣

It feels a bit surreal to be honest - I mean, we all get there eventually!!

Reflecting on my life, so many amazing things have happened!

Living and working overseas, buying my 1st property on my own, renovating our family home with Glenn, having a fur baby plus writing and self-publishing 3 books! And of course, having my beautiful boy, Jenson.

Whilst the road to parenthood was not what I envisaged. I would honestly not change it all. I can’t imagine life not being a donor egg mumma. 🥚🧬

So here’s to 50 years around the sun! 🌞

This is my mum, Dianne!

Today is the first Mother’s Day in a very long time - like well over 10 years - that we have spent the day together. Being on opposite ends of Australia doesn’t make it easy to celebrate this day together 😢

A few weeks ago my step-dad had major hip replacement surgery. My mum was not in a good place and it was a no brainer to fly over and help. ✈️

On a positive note, Mother’s Day just happened to be around when I was visiting her.

In the past few weeks I have:

- mowed lawns
- cooked
- cleaned
- decluttered and made some $$ on FB marketplace
- driven to a lot of hospital appointments
- worked
- and just been there for whatever my family needed!

Even though we have only spent half the day together today - I know the time we have spent in the last 2.5 weeks outweighs the day itself today.

Have I missed my son today, absolutely!! But today has been about my mum, and how much I love her. ❤️

She needed this day for me to be here with her. I needed these last 2.5 weeks.

No fancy present can ever takeaway the warmth and love you feel when you just hug your mum and tell her “I love you.”

I love you so much mum. 🥰

Now I get to fly home and enjoy Mother’s Day as a mum.

I can’t actually believe I am even writing this!!

As an author of children’s books - and very much have LGBTQIA books on my radar to write…I read yesterday/today that such books are going to be banned in public libraries.

have voted to remove all same s*x parenting books in 8 of its libraries in surrounding areas.

Apparently families have been complaining to the local councillor about a book called Same S*x Parents by Hollu Duhig. The counsellor who brought forward the vote - hasn’t even read the book! Let me repeat that, he hasn’t read the book!!

How is this even happening in 2024?

I literally am beyond words. It’s very sad. Books are books.

As a parent that visits my local library every week - if there is a book I don’t like, guess what….I don’t borrow it!

If you are based in Australia- please help overturn this horrendous decision. My heart goes out to ALL the families in that area. ❤️

PS - I will share the petition link so you can sign if you know this is just a very DUMB idea!

Donor Conception Conversations - Part 3

We sit on the letter S for a bit, but watching the captions back…

⭐️ Jenson was right! It does start with an S and A - South Africa. Well done buddy ✅

⭐️ Overall, I’m really happy with what he knows at the age of 6.

It’s not a conversation we have every day - but if I can weave it in and it’s relevant…then I will share it with him!

I hope you have enjoyed the videos 🙂

It’s been really eye opening to see the knowledge of a child who is donor conceived. But more so someone who has known from the very beginning they are donor conceived.

Donor Conception Conversations - Part 1

Last week Jenson and I were packing some book orders. I was filming some content and managed to tape this conversation!

Whilst this video is Part 1 - I have already picked up some areas of our conversation that I can definitely improve on!

⭐️ I love the fact that Jenson understands that I wrote a book and it’s sharing my story about how he was conceived. He repeats this a few times so 👍

⭐️ I don’t want Jenson to ever feel he was “born differently”.

Maybe that’s just the way he knew how to articulate himself. But him saying “I was born that way” is definitely something I can help explain a bit better…

⭐️ He makes me laugh saying he was born sleeping. Obviously he doesn’t know what this means to us as adults. He just thinks he was born sleeping 😴 💤

Whilst this is a small snippet of the whole video (I will post part 2 tomorrow). I haven’t had this type of conversation with my son for a while.

I took away that at age 6 - he gets it. Yes, it may still need some refinement and tweaking….but by sharing this at an early age and often. Our little ones are smart little cookies!! 🍪

What do you think? When was the last time you had an impromptu chat with your little one??

Look out for Part 2 tomorrow ❤️

After all, we can pretty much recite our donor egg journey to others with our eyes closed!! 👀

But having that conversation with our little precious ones - that’s a whole different ball game!

The most common DM I get is not about how to start the conversation, but what to actually say.

“Nat - when did you start speaking with Jenson and what did you say to him.”

And as a donor egg mum - I get it!

With the feelings of overwhelm, worry, anxiety and stress about how you think this conversation will go. The last headache you need is what do you actually say during that conversation.

That’s why the conversation needs to be:

⭐️ Simple - no big words needed here.

Think KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid - although none of us are actually stupid!)

⭐️ Engaging - we all know little people have short attention spans. Short conversations often will be far more beneficial than long conversations periodically. Especially when your kids get older.

⭐️ Honest - there is nothing to be ashamed about. Your journey is unique to you and that’s what makes your little one unique too!

Jenson often tells me he is from “South Africa”. This makes me so proud that he understands his origins. 🇿🇦 (I do have more about this for another post).

Your story can evolve as your little people become big people….by adding in more detail that they will understand.

Share with me below how you shared your story. I would love to know ❤️

And if you still are unsure how to start - The Journey to You Children’s Books can definitely help you! 📚
