The Australian Government has introduced four new mandatory safety and information standards for button batteries and consumer products containing button batteries effective from the 22nd June 2022.

These new mandatory standards have been introduced to reduce the risk of death and injury associated with the use of button batteries.

The new standards will require:
🪛 secure battery compartments to prevent children from gaining access to the batteries
✅ supplier compliance testing to demonstrate batteries are secure
🔒 child-resistant packaging for higher risk batteries
⚠️ additional warnings and emergency advice on packaging and instructions

Businesses failing to comply with these standards can be penalised with a fine of up to $10 million.

⚠️These standards only apply to new products purchased in Australia from 22nd June 2022. Any items manufactured and purchased prior to this date may not be safe and could be a risk for children.

Please ensure all products in your home are button battery safe.
