A little fabric deep dive because this is the reason bai was born in the first place:
Trying to move away from polyester activewear, it was surprisingly hard to find natural fibre sets that actually felt as cute and looked as good as the usual polyester sets.
There are so many natural fibres and fabric compositions out there, and we’ve tried a lot of them. Different cottons, bamboo, blends, weights and percentages of stretch. Lots of samples, lots of testing.
The more we learnt, the more we realised there isn’t ONE perfect fabric that wins on every front: sustainability, performance, longevity, skin + chemical exposure, look and feel.
Sustainability isn’t just natural vs synthetic. It’s the resources used to make a fibre, how it’s processed, how long it lasts, how often you wear it, what it sheds when worn and washed, and what happens at the end of its life.
And when activewear sits directly against our skin for hours, often while sweating, we also care about what the fibre is made from and the dyes, chemicals and finishes used to make it.
And it still needs to perform, look good and be something you genuinely want to wear.
So it became about finding the right balance.
Booflex is where we landed for our core activewear.
• Organic cotton brings substance + moisture absorbency.
• Tanboocell bamboo brings the buttery softness and smooth feel against the skin that makes you want to live in it.
• Then there’s 12% elastane for stretch + recovery. Because while we want to use as many natural fibres as possible, we still want leggings that stretch, hold their shape and support you. We’re not pretending you can make a performance legging out of plants alone just yet.
We aim for 300+ GSM, giving Booflex enough weight and coverage to feel supportive, squat-proof and snatching.
We call ourselves imperfectly eco-conscious for a reason. There isn’t one perfect fabric that ticks every box. This is the balance that currently makes the most sense to us.
And we’ll probably never stop playing with natural fibres and seeing what we can make them do. 🤎
