Victorians, heading away for the Cup long weekend? 🏇🚐

Before you hitch up, give your tyres five minutes:

✅ Pressures, set cold, to your placard (not the number on the sidewall). The spare too.
✅ Tread: at least 1.5 mm in the main grooves. That’s the legal minimum.
✅ Sidewalls: no cracks, bulges or cuts, inside and out
✅ Date code: the last 4 digits of the DOT code are the week and year the tyre was made
✅ Valve caps on and done up

Then on your first day, check the van again after about an hour of towing. Rose about 4 psi? You started about right.

Quick one before the weekend 🔧

A portable pump is brilliant for getting a soft tyre back up so you can drive on and get it looked at.

But a pump isn’t a repair. It doesn’t fix a puncture.

If the same tyre keeps dropping within days, it’s got a slow leak. Get it repaired rather than topping it up every morning.

A spare only helps if it’s ready to go. They lose air slowly like any other tyre, and most of us only find out when we need it.

Next time you check your pressures, do all five (six with a van spare). It takes a minute.

Getting the van ready for the season? Check your tyres’ birthday first 🎂

Every tyre has a DOT code on the sidewall. The last four digits tell you when it was made: the week, then the year.

3921 = week 39 of 2021.

Why it matters for caravans: van tyres often spend months parked, so they usually age out before they wear out. Good tread doesn’t mean a young tyre.

The rule of thumb:
✅ 5 years old: get them inspected by a tyre shop every year
✅ Around 7 years: many owners replace them, whatever the tread

Quick one: where do you get your tyre pressure from? 🤔

If it’s the number on the side of the tyre, that’s the most air the tyre is rated for. It’s not the pressure to run.

The number you want is on your tyre placard:
🚙 Car or 4WD: on the driver’s door jamb (or the fuel flap or glovebox)
🚐 Caravan: near the drawbar or inside the front boot lid

Set your pressures cold, to the placard. Many placards list a higher figure for a full load or towing, so use the one that matches your trip.

Pumping to the sidewall number wears the centre of the tread and gives a harder ride.

Save this for your next check, and tag the mate who always pumps to the max 😅
