Five times. That’s how many times melanoma has shown up in my life.

And it’s changed everything, right down to something as simple as my daily walk.

These days you’ll find me out here after the sun goes down. No UV. No hat, no sunnies, just me and the quiet of the evening.

My walks look different now. But I’m still walking, and that’s everything. 🌙

Hat on in winter? A few funny looks, sure. But UV doesn’t clock off just because it’s cold. 🥶

Plenty of our winter days climb to 3 or higher UV! the level where skin damage quietly starts. Cloud doesn’t stop it. Cold doesn’t stop it. And because we can’t feel UV, it’s the easy one to forget.

Here is the gap most of us never think about.

🧴 Sunscreen stops at the skin.

It does nothing for the eyes, and kids’ eyes actually let in more UV than ours because their pupils are larger and their lenses are clearer.

More time outside, more exposure, and it is cumulative.

The fix is not complicated.

Proper UV400 sunnies, worn like we wear seatbelts.

Hold them up to a shiny surface, your phone screen or a puddle works perfectly, and slowly rotate them.

If the glare fades, they are truly polarised. If nothing changes, they are just tinted plastic.

Polarised is comfort.
UV400 is protection.

Little eyes need both, or they end up squinting and pulling them straight off.

Most parents check the price and the colour.

Almost nobody checks the one thing that actually matters. Look for UV400 on the label.
Not UV PROTECTION
NOT BLOCKS UV the actual number.

If it is not there, you are buying a fashion accessory, not eye protection.

Coming from a 5 x melanoma survivor who learned this the hard way. Save this so you remember at the checkout 💛

2026 AusMumpreneur Finalist, Overcoming the Odds Award. This one hits differently. 🌿

There were days I wondered if I had the energy to keep going. Ombra & Sole was born out of my own battle with melanoma. Multiple diagnoses (5 to be exact!) across my 30s changed everything, and instead of letting fear win, I turned it into a mission to protect other families from what my family went through.

Melanoma took a lot from me, but it also gave me a purpose I never expected. Building a sun protection brand while healing, parenting, and teaching has not been easy, but every family that chooses sun safe living makes it worth it.

To every parent who has felt scared about the sun, overwhelmed by choices, or unsure they were doing enough, I see you. This brand is for you. And being recognised for overcoming the odds reminds me exactly why I started. Thank you AusMumpreneur. 🧡

We are a 2026 AusMumpreneur Finalist for People’s Choice, Making a Difference: Business, and this one is decided by YOU. 🥹

I still can’t quite believe I get to type that. Ombra & Sole has always been about more than hats and sunnies. When I started this brand after my own melanoma journey, the goal was simple. Help Aussie families enjoy the sun safely, look good doing it, and give back to melanoma research along the way. Every hat sold sends a dollar to skin cancer research, and every family who chooses to protect their little ones is part of that mission.
