A clever use of what was already there. One of my favourite details in Molecule Studio’s recent restoration of the Queenscliff Hotel is the transformation of the original bar cellar.
Rather than trying to make the space something it wasn’t, the designers recognised the potential in an overlooked part of the building. The cellar was originally accessed only through a small floor hatch and was no longer practical for its original purpose. With a carefully considered new stair and minimal intervention to the existing fabric, it has been given a completely new life as an intimate w**e tasting room.
For me, this is a great reminder that good design isn’t always about adding more space; it’s about seeing the possibilities in the space you already have.
And this is why I think it is so important for designers to continually study the work of other designers and architects.
Not to copy, but to learn how other people solve problems and how they work with constraints, heritage, materials, light, circulation and the quirks of an existing building.
The more work we look at, the bigger our design vocabulary becomes.
There is always something to learn from a great project.
