What does sanctuary mean to you?

A quiet garden? The sound of rain on a tin roof? A mountain creek? The embrace of someone you love? Or perhaps, like me, it's the feeling of opening a really good book.

To celebrate this year's Byron Writers Festival theme, we've launched the first in a week-long series of curated collections exploring the many ways we find sanctuary.

Today we're beginning with 🌿 Sanctuary in Nature—a collection of books celebrating gardens, forests, rainforests, birds, native plants and the restorative power of the natural world.

Alongside the collection, I've also written a personal blog reflecting on what sanctuary has meant to me, and why I believe books can become places of refuge in their own right.

When I heard this year's Byron Writers Festival theme was Sanctuary, I found myself sitting with the word for a while. What does it really mean? For me, it immediately brings to mind words like peace, safety, tranquillity, repose and nourishment. It's the quietening of chaos. It's crawling into bed....
