Ok so I’m gonna get a little personal today. 🫣
So as you guys know I am a very new (just under 6 months) and very small (just me and my sewing room) business. I knew that it was going to be difficult to get started and I was prepared (or so I thought) for how ‘slowly’ things would move in the beginning. But I think, naively, I still thought that things would progressively move in an upward trend. Ummm nope. That is not at all how it works. 🤦🏻♀️ Silly me!
I know the market is on a downturn and that people are struggling, we are all struggling, but I guess I didn’t factor in how ‘personally’ I would take it. Like a rejection of epic proportions 😢 Am I being childish? Am I being silly? Have other small business owners felt the same way? I’m genuinely curious, please comment your own experiences with trying to start a creative business.
My sewing honestly gives me so much joy and has helped me to cope when things get difficult. As a creative person (I have always drawn, painted and I studied literature at uni), I put my heart into everything I make - so I think this is the reason I felt so deflated after my latest market and this is on top of my Etsy store not seeming to do anything. I honestly had a cry to my husband and asked him ‘what is the point?’ ‘Perhaps I should just quit?’
And then this morning I woke up to an email in my inbox. An order on my Etsy page! I cannot tell you how happy I was! It didn’t matter whether it was a small order or that it was just one. Someone liked what they saw and wanted to spend their hard earned money on something I have made!!! 🙀🥹
I have spent sooooo much time this morning, wrapping and packaging my little order and rushed down to the post office to send it off. I called my husband and my bestie as well as FaceTimed my daughter! 🤣 It’s not the money! It’s the fact that I packed a little piece of myself off to a stranger. I hope when they open their package they can feel how much their choice has affected me - it really has made my day. So THANK YOU! 🥰🍒♥️🌸
