Thank you to everyone that has contacted me because they heard about the terrible flooding in the Quilpie area. I'm grateful for your concern and for taking the time to let me know you're thinking of us. ๐ Please keep reaching out to the people that touch your life because it means you're a wonderful, caring person who makes the world a better place.
The thing is that even though itโs been reported there's no terrible flooding happening and instead itโs clickbait. Want to check it? Look the height of the Bulloo River at Quilpie on the BOM website: https://www.bom.gov.au/fwo/IDQ65397/IDQ65397.545007.plt.shtml (at the time of writing this it was 1.3m below the bridge) or other places nearby. There's minor, localised flooding, but it's the kind that happens at least once a year, nothing newsworthy.
The rain we have had has been very welcome, and we're very grateful for it. Itโs a big relief. There's now grass growing where there wasn't any before and water in dams, creeks and waterholes where there wasn't any before. What we were facing before the rain is more newsworthy than the flooding.
Some other things that are happening in my part of the world that are newsworthy (but not clickbait):
- The repairs and rebuilding that are still happening after the March 25 flooding in the Adavale area. It's a long, hard road to recovery.
- Telstra removing our only reliable and convenient form of communication when the power goes out, and the power goes out more regularly than the minor flooding. Our radio landline is an absolute godsend and soon we will be without it. This is happening all across Australia.
- I should probably add that we live with regular power outages to the list. Every time I see that there's a storm in the area I get ready for the power to go out. How do we tell Ergon the power has gone out so they can fix it? With the radio landline we won't have soon.
- How much time I've spent in the last year trying to get our remote address correct in the Australia Post official address list and other places. Many government services (like Medicare) now only use the Australia Post official address list and apparently we still don't exist.
Okay, my rant is over. Living remotely is a struggle for survival at times and it would be great if what is happening is shared accurately, instead of incorrect clickbait.
