Nepal contributes only around 0.027% of global greenhouse-gas emissions (Nepal First NDC, UNFCCC), yet it is already facing severe climate impacts.

Across the Hindu Kush Himalaya, glacier mass loss was 65% faster in the 2010s than in 2000–2009. Even at 1.5–2°C warming, 30–50% of glacier volume could disappear by 2100; under current emissions pathways, losses could reach up to 80% (ICIMOD HI-WISE, 2023).

Retreating glaciers are also increasing glacial-lake risks, with GLOF risk projected to rise about 3× across the Hindu Kush Himalaya by century’s end (ICIMOD).

Is this climate justice?

When those who contributed least suffer some of the greatest consequences, the burden is not being shared fairly.

Nepal is helping heal the Earth. The world must stop making Nepal pay for everyone else’s emissions.

Nepal contributes only 0.05% of the world’s annual CO₂ emissions.

Yet Nepal is already living with the consequences of a climate crisis it did very little to create.

Our forests are protected. Our mountains, rivers and natural reserves are part of a landscape that helps sustain far more than just Nepal. But rising temperatures, melting glaciers, extreme rainfall, floods and landslides do not stop at the borders of the countries that produced the emissions.

The uncomfortable question remains:

When the countries contributing the least are forced to suffer the consequences of those contributing the most — who is responsible?

Climate change is global.
But responsibility is not equal.

NEPAL DID NOT CREATE THIS CRISIS.
CLIMATE JUSTICE MUST MATTER.
