A small reminder that behind every small business is a human being 🤍

There isn’t a large team behind Birds on Bikes. There is me, a small production team, a cutting table, a sewing room, a long list of ideas, and a genuine desire to make cycling clothing that helps women feel more comfortable on their bikes.

Most days, I love what I do.

Some days, things don’t go to plan. Orders take longer than expected. Messages pile up. Production slows down. I make mistakes, feel overwhelmed and wonder whether I’m doing enough.

Running a small business can look polished from the outside, but behind the photos, products and emails is a real person trying to balance customers, manufacturing, creativity, finances and life.

This isn’t a complaint. It’s just a little reality check, and a thank you.

Thank you to the customers who have been patient, kind and encouraging. Thank you to those who have shared honest feedback too. Both matter.

I care deeply about Birds on Bikes and the women I make these clothes for. I’m still learning, still improving and still showing up.

The question almost every new cyclist wonders about—but may not want to ask:

Should you wear underwear with padded cycling shorts?

For most riders, the answer is no.

Padded cycling shorts are designed to be worn directly against the skin so the chamois can do its job properly. Adding underwear can mean extra seams, more moisture, bunching and a greater chance of chafing.

We keep saying we want more products made in Australia, but who is going to make them?

One of the biggest challenges I face as a Brisbane clothing manufacturer is finding experienced industrial sewing machinists.

This is not the same as being able to sew at home.

A skilled production machinist needs to understand industrial machines, stretch fabrics, thread tension, construction techniques, quality control and how to produce garments accurately and consistently. These skills take years to develop.

Yet there are fewer experienced machinists available, many are approaching retirement, and not enough younger people are being trained to take their place.

What I find incredibly frustrating is that sewing machinists are not being treated as a priority occupation for training support.

There is a qualification pathway, but small manufacturers are often expected to carry most of the cost, time and responsibility of training someone from the beginning.

I would love to train the next generation of machinists. I want these skills to be passed on. But small businesses cannot solve an entire industry-wide skills shortage without meaningful support.

Sewing machinists are skilled tradespeople.

They make clothing, uniforms, sporting apparel, medical products, protective equipment, furnishings and so many of the products Australians use every day.

Once these skills disappear, they will be incredibly difficult to rebuild.

Wear them 20 times and that works out to $11 per ride.
Wear them 50 times and it drops to $4.40 per ride.
Wear them 100 times and it’s just $2.20 per ride.

Of course, value isn’t only about the maths.

It’s about comfortable padding, a supportive high waistband, practical pockets, no inside-leg seam rubbing and a pair of pants you actually want to reach for again and again.

Because the cheapest pair isn’t always the best value if it stays in the drawer.

The best value is the pair you actually want to wear — ride after ride.

A little behind-the-scenes truth: I’m running behind this week.

Between making, packing, website updates and continuing my knee recovery, social media slipped down the list. But Birds on Bikes is still very much moving forward, just at a slightly slower tour pace.
