FAMILY ADVENTURES

Packed up the car, grabbed the girls and headed north looking for a little family adventure.

Found our spot, set up camp and while everything was getting sorted I sent a bait out.

45 minutes later the rod bent over and the reel was singing like the lead singer at a rock concert 😂

This fish was BIG, angry and in shallow water. I turned its head and knew straight away it was a serious demersal. I’m thinking this could be right up there with one of my best fish.

Halfway in… POP.

Gone.

Rig on the sand told the story. Pulled knot on the three way. That one hurt 😂 Fishing has a pretty good way of keeping you humble.

But that ended up being such a small part of an unreal couple of days.

We landed a beautiful 73cm snapper and a wobbegong, Tara and Lexi cooked some wicked feeds, we had the little fire going, tunes playing and watched an absolute cracking WA sunset together.

Best part was knowing our unborn little girl was there for her first family camping trip ❤️ One day we’ll get to tell her she was already coming on adventures before she was even born.

Then the drive home delivered one last adventure 😂 Got ourselves into a proper pickle with the car on the beach.

With a pregnant partner beside me and a 13 year old with school the next day, it wasn’t worth the hero complex or risking a rolled car. We called for some extra help, got everyone out safely and added another story to the memory bank.

That’s what these trips are really about.

Fish lost. Fish landed. Campfires. Good food. Sunsets. Getting into a not ideal situation on the beach. Laughing about it afterwards and having the people you love beside you through all of it.

The 73cm snapper was a cracking fish…

But having my whole family there was the real catch. ❤️

CATCH IT. SMOKE IT. EAT IT.

This was hands down one of the best ways I’ve cooked snapper. The flavour was absolutely insane.

Fresh snapper from yesterday’s morning’s session, scaled, gutted and dried before salting the skin and getting the smoker fired up.

I stuffed the cavity with red onion, capsicum, tomato and fresh lemon, then made what ended up being the absolute hero of the cook, the butter paste.

THE BUTTER PASTE….

🧈 Butter
🌶️ Chilli
🧄 Fresh garlic
🫚 Fresh ginger
🍋 Fresh lemon juice and zest
🥢 sweet chilli soy sauce
🍯 Touch of brown sugar
⚫ Cracked black pepper

Mixed it all together and pasted it generously over the snapper.

Then into the smoker.

I set the smoker up at around 135–145°C with the ceramic heat deflector plates in, so the snapper was cooking completely over indirect heat.

Lid down and let it slowly smoke, with that butter, chilli, ginger, garlic and lemon melting over the fish as it cooked. I kept brushing more of the butter mixture over the top during the cook.

That smell alone was next level.

Once the internal temperature of the snapper hit around 45°C, I removed the ceramic plates from the smoker.

The difference was now there was nothing between the snapper and the hot coals.

INDIRECT → DIRECT HEAT

This is where everything changed.

The butter started sizzling over the beads, the skin began to char, and the garlic, chilli, ginger and lemon caramelised across the outside of the fish.

I kept cooking it directly over the heat until the snapper was cooked through and had that beautiful smoky, charred finish.

Served it straight off the smoker with sweet potato chips, charred broccolini and asparagus, with plenty of fresh lemon on the side.

The result was ridiculous.

Smoky, buttery and juicy through the middle with that charred skin on the outside. But that combination of BUTTER + CHILLI + GINGER + GARLIC + LEMON was the winner.

If you’ve got a whole snapper sitting in the fridge after a session, save this recipe and give it a crack.

Catch it yourself. Cook it over fire. Feed the family.

Hard to beat.

3:45AM. NEW GROUND. BIG REDS.

Up at quarter to four this morning and headed north of Perth with Graham to have a look at some new ground.

We checked a few spots before finding one that looked too good not to have a crack at.

Tyres down, Graham in the Patrol, me in the Fortuner and onto the beach. Got pretty boggy in sections, but we eventually found a cracking little spot and set up.

The morning just looked fishy. Overcast, quiet and hardly anyone around.

Sent the first bait out with the Swellpro Waterproof Drones Fisherman Max FD2 and put a 51cm snapper on the beach.

Kept the baits going and eventually found some better fish.

73cm red followed by an absolute horse at 86cm and 9.4kg.

Big head. Big guts. Proper solid WA pinky.

Pretty bloody hard to complain about a morning like that.

Early start, exploring some new coastline with a mate, getting the 4WDs onto the sand, sending a few baits and bringing home a feed.

Days like this remind me how lucky we are to live where we do.

Get outside. Explore. Respect the environment. Take what you need and appreciate what we’ve got.

For me, that’s freedom.

Living life your way and doing more of what you love.

Family holiday. Birthday weekend. One hour to fish. That’s all I needed. 🎣🔥

We headed down south for Tara and Lexi’s birthday weekend. The girls wanted to squeeze in a morning surf, so while they were learning in the whitewash, Tara dropped me at the top of a hill a little further north, away from the surfers.

I looked down at the climb and thought… I’ve got about an hour. Let’s send one.

Gear on the back, down the cliff, onto the beach.

🚁 SwellPro out.
🎣 Bait dropped 700m offshore.

About 35 minutes later… ON.

And straight away I knew this wasn’t a little fish.

The whole fight I was thinking, there’s no way I’m getting this thing all the way back from 700 metres.

But metre by metre she kept coming.

Then out of the wash appeared an absolute slab of a dhuie. 🤯

Somewhere around the metre mark and I’m guessing 16–18kg before we get a proper weight.

JOB DONE.

Best part?

The girls rang saying they were 10 minutes away, and by then I already had the rod packed, backpack loaded and everything dragged back to the bottom of the track.

Tara, Lexi and Summer came down and couldn’t believe what was lying there. 😂

Then it became a family mission getting the fish, gear and ourselves back up that bloody cliff before grabbing a few photos at the top.

They went surfing.

I went fishing.

Everyone got what they came for. 😂🤙

And tonight?

Dhu fish FOR DINNER, BABY! 🔥🐟

700m drop.
35 minutes.
One opportunity.
One absolute cracker of a fish.

SwellPro getting it done.
ODC getting it done every day.

SNAPPER SUNRISE

What a season it’s been.

Some unreal mornings with my mate Jamie from Jamie Hedley , chasing sunrises instead of sleeping in and creating memories that will last a lifetime. Those moments remind me why it’s called fishing, not catching.

Then life hit pause.

Fracturing my foot wasn’t part of the plan, but tomorrow I finally see the specialist. Fingers crossed I get the green light because I’m itching to get back on the sand where I belong.

While I’ve been off the beach, I’ve been putting that energy into something else… creating.

The next wave of One Drop Cartel designs is coming this summer, and I honestly can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on. Bigger stories. Better gear. Same mission.

Here’s to healed feet, pink sunrises, bent rods, and plenty more snapper sessions ahead.

The hunt is the true reward. 🤙

Red sky. Big snapper. Pure gratitude.
One of those moments you never forget. 🌅🐟

21/06/2026

Some moments hit different.

Standing there with the red sky burning over the ocean, the cold morning air, the water alive in front of me… then this 80cm snapper comes up and everything just felt like it aligned.

The walk in, the effort, the timing, the people, the ocean, the universe all of it came together for one of those rare moments you don’t just remember… you carry it.

This wasn’t just a fish.
This was a gratitude moment.
One I’ll be able to pull on forever when life gets heavy.

Man I love what this sport brings into my life.
