Saphire Batik Creations is all about mixing a traditional art form called batik into our modern day to day living and creating something different from all others. The word Batik in Malay (language of Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei) translates “to write” or “to dot”. This ancient art has been handed down for thousands of years and has spread as far as the Middle East, Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia,
China, Thailand, Philippines, India, Caribbean and more! Of all these countries mentioned, Batik is most common on the island Java, Indonesia. At the onset of batik in Indonesia only royalty and wealthy families were the ones who possessed this incredibly fine piece of art. It was a hobby for the royal women and certain designs played the role of identifying families, social status or geographical location on the island. Many patterns used today in batik have special meanings and will bring special blessings on those who wear them. The original influence of this art form can be found in religion, mainly Hindu and Islam. Many of the patterns used are of Islamic influence. Also some designs included “Shiva and Ganesha” which are Hindu deities. The Dutch also play a major role in influencing the art by adding more colours to the Batik’s palette. Over the years, as batik made its advances throughout the world, it was influenced greatly by the cultures in which it reached. The Caribbean, one of many of these places, contained a culture and history so rich and vibrant; batik was all but taken to another level. Tales of sun, sea and sand, flora and fauna, fine Caribbean living and memories, the reason for a whole nation’s existence, all this scribe into a quality substrate, made to last.
