According to an official estimate, approximately 120,000 cataract patients are added every year. Over 6 million people in Bangladesh need vision correction by spectacles and other means. Appr

oximately 150,000 irreversible blind require rehabilitation. There are about 40,000 visually impaired women and children in Bangladesh, of whom an estimated 12,000 have cataracts. It is a matter of concern that 80% of the visually impaired persons live in rural areas where the treatment facilities are very poor as 90% of the doctors and paramedics are urban-based. The government is working to achieve goals set under Vision 2020. The National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital is coordinating the overall activities at national level. There are separate eye care units in all medical college hospitals and district-level general hospitals. A large number of hospitals in the private and non-government sectors and many international organisations are working to address avoidable blindness in the country and supporting the government in the development of the eye care sector. The International Centre of Eye Health, an affiliate of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine carried out a countrywide joint survey with the National Institute of Ophthalmology, Bangladesh. The survey revealed that 16.4 per cent of Bangladeshi adults -- both men and women -- who are over 30 years of age, regardless of whether they are from villages or cities, have defective eyesight (refractive error). This means about 3.3 million people have a problem with their eyesight (

⚫️ in 1975, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was brutally assassinated along with his family members. The assassination-coup was staged by a cohort of renegade army personnel. 🇧🇩 lost its founding father and the first president, along with the progressive nation-building vision, which was popularized as “Golden Bengal” in the national imagination.
👓 was a statesman who inspired the Bengali nation to pursue the dream of a free and independent Bangladesh. In 1971, the Bengalis rose to his call and fought the against the Pakistan Army.
Soon after the assassination, a military junta backed by a vested alliance from the Pakistani era assumed control of the country which lasted for over 15 years. They distorted the founding principles of Bangladesh and led the country's development trajectory into instability.
The ramifications of the assassination are still palpable in the South Asian history, politics and beyond. Academic pursuits are still afoot centering the life, works and brutal assassination of Mujib.
