Why Your Zipper's Nickle Test Matters More Than You Think
If you produce apparel, bags, or accessories, here’s a simple test that can save your brand from recalls, returns, and reputational damage:
The Nickel Test (or Nickel Spot Test)
It’s a quick chemical check to see if the metal parts of your zippers (or buttons, rivets) contain nickel that can be released onto skin.
🔬 What Is It?
A few drops of a testing solution are applied to the zipper pull or slider. If the solution turns pink, nickel is present above safe limits. No color change means the item passes.
🤔 Why Should You Care?
Nickel allergies are common – up to 17% of people may be sensitive.
Regulations in the EU, US, and elsewhere restrict nickel release in items meant for prolonged skin contact (like jeans zippers, jewelry, watch straps).
Brand protection – no one wants complaints about skin rashes from your product.
âś… When to Test
Before bulk production – test all metal trims from your supplier.
During random inspections – don’t assume all batches are the same.
If sourcing from a new factory – verify their claims of “nickel-free” or “compliant” finishes.
📝 Pro Tip for Brands
Always specify “nickel-free” or “REACH/CPSC compliant” in your purchase orders and ask for test reports from certified labs. The spot test is great for quick checks, but lab reports are your legal proof.
Using compliant zippers isn't just about safety—it’s about trust. Your customers may never know you tested, but they’ll feel the quality.
