What is the main purpose of singeing in fabric processing?
🔹 Definition
Singeing is a mechanical–thermal surface treatment where fabric is passed rapidly over a flame or heated surface to burn off protruding fibers without damaging the main yarn structure.
🔹 Main Objectives:
a. Remove surface hairiness
-Eliminates loose fiber ends that protrude from yarns
-Creates a uniform fabric surface
b. Improve aesthetic quality
-Enhances luster and clarity of weave/knit structure
-Produces a clean, high-quality appearance
c. Improve downstream processing
-Dyeing: Ensures uniform dye pe*******on
-Printing: Prevents feathering or blurred outlines
-Finishing: Allows even chemical application
d. Reduce defects
-Minimizes pilling formation
-Reduces lint generation during use.
🔹 Working Principle:
Fabric passes at high speed over:
-Gas flames (most common)
-Heated copper plates / cylinders
Exposure time: very short (fractions of a second)
Only protruding fibers ignite and burn
Fabric body remains unaffected due to:
-Controlled flame intensity
-Precise speed regulation
🔹 Types of Singeing Machines:
a. Plate Singeing
-Fabric passes over heated plates
-Less common, used for delicate control
b. Roller/Cylinder Singeing
-Heated rotating cylinders
-Moderate efficiency
c. Gas Flame Singeing (Most widely used)
-Direct flame contact
-High efficiency and uniform results
🔹 Process Sequence (Typical Flow)
Singeing is usually done before wet processing:
Grey Fabric → Singeing → Desizing → Scouring → Bleaching → Dyeing/Printing
🔹 Key Process Parameters:
Fabric speed → too slow = damage risk
Flame intensity & temperature → must be controlled
Distance from flame → affects burning efficiency
Fabric tension → ensures even exposure
Moisture content → slightly moist fabric reduces risk of over-burning
🔹 After-Treatment:
Immediately after singeing:
Fabric passes through water bath or quenching system.
Purpose:
-Extinguish any glowing particles
-Remove burnt ash
🔹 Advantages:
Smooth surface
Better color yield and brightness
Improved print sharpness
Reduced linting
🔹 Risks / Defects (if poorly controlled):
Over-singeing → fabric strength loss, holes
Under-singeing → residual fuzz remains
Uneven singeing → patchy appearance
🔹 Application Scope:
Common for woven cotton fabrics.
Also applied to:
-Blends (poly-cotton)
-Some knitted fabrics (with care)
In dyeing & finishing plants, singeing is critical for export-quality fabric, especially for buyers like:
-High-end brands requiring sharp prints & clean surface
-Technical fabrics where low linting is essential
