How to measure a baby's feet at home?
Place your child's foot on a piece of plain A4 paper. ...
Mark the top of their longest toe on the paper (hint: this may not be their big toe!)
Then, make a mark at the longest point at the back of their heel.
Using your ruler or tape measure, measure the point between the two lines in mm.

Soft-soled shoes are recommended for babies, especially when they are learning to walk, for several important reasons:

1. Better Foot Development
Babies’ feet are still developing — the bones are soft and forming. Soft-soled shoes allow the feet to move naturally, helping muscles and ligaments grow properly and supporting the development of balance and coordination.

2. Mimics Barefoot Walking
Experts often say the best way for babies to learn to walk is barefoot. Soft soles closely mimic this experience by allowing the baby to feel the ground, which helps them develop better proprioception (awareness of their body in space).

3. Improved Grip and Balance
Because they can feel the floor, babies get better feedback with each step. This helps them adjust their movements and build stability, which is key in the early stages of walking.

4. Comfort and Flexibility
Soft-soled shoes are more comfortable and flexible than stiff shoes. They accommodate the chubby, wide shape of baby feet and don’t restrict natural movement or growth.

5. Safety Indoors
Hard soles are often unnecessary (and can be slippery) indoors, where many babies first begin to walk. Soft soles offer enough protection without compromising movement.
