In celebration of Black Babywearing Week, join me for a live demonstration of traditional torso carrying with a Chitenge.
Black Babywearing Week was created to center Black babies, caregivers, educators, and families, and I am grateful for the African American leaders who created this space and continue to champion Black voices in babywearing.
I feel honoured to bring my own heritage into that celebration. The women who taught me to carry babies are the same women who carried me as a baby. They taught me to wear babies the same way they taught me to feed myself, care for others, and belong to a community. These are not practices I learned from a class or a book. They are part of a living tradition that has been passed from one generation to the next.
This lived experience, of over 4 Decades of personal and community babywearing, is a tradition I am honored to share.
Join me as we celebrate Black Babywearing Week and honor the wisdom, culture, and communities that continue to carry it forward.
