More than 100 victims were identified after paying for travel services, only to be left without transportation or accommodations.

Following a lengthy fraud investigation, Wood Buffalo RCMP have charged 58-year-old Ujeer Ahmed, the former owner of International Travel Services in Peter Pond Mall, with fraud over $5,000 and money laundering. Police have also issued a warrant for his arrest after being unable to locate him.

RCMP say the victims collectively lost about $500,000, with some only discovering their reservations had never been paid for after arriving at the airport or an all-inclusive resort.

RCMP say Ahmed no longer lives in the Fort McMurray/Wood Buffalo region and are asking anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact police.

The business has since closed.

A serial tire slasher damaged almost 40 vehicles during an overnight vandalism spree in downtown Fort McMurray.

The damage is believed to have occurred between 10:00 p.m. on June 28 and 4:00 a.m. on June 29, with vehicles targeted near 15 & 16 Saunderson Avenue and 111 & 112 Charles Avenue, including the River Valley Manor and Birchwood Manor apartment complexes.

Police believe the suspect, or suspects, moved through the area over several hours, slashing tires on dozens of parked vehicles. One resident told Postmedia she had to postpone a job interview because her vehicle was no longer drivable.

Residents are encouraged to check their security cameras and dashcam footage from that night.

Meta is bringing its first-ever Canadian AI data center to Sturgeon County, northeast of Edmonton, with an investment of more than $13 billion, one of the largest private sector investments in Canadian history.

The 1-gigawatt facility is expected to create more than 3,000 construction jobs and 300 permanent jobs, generate approximately $250 million annually for Alberta, and include a $60 million investment in local infrastructure.

The project will operate under Alberta’s “bring your own power” model, using both grid electricity and new on-site natural gas generation. It will also feature a closed-loop cooling system that requires no operational water for cooling.

The facility will become Meta’s first data center in Canada and its 33rd worldwide, supporting the company’s growing artificial intelligence infrastructure.

What do you think the impact will be on Fort McMurray and the region?

We need this woman to come teach a masterclass in speaking bear. 🤓🐻

A black bear showed up on her front porch during 4th of July fireworks like she was the bears emotional support animal 😳

Meanwhile, half of Fort McMurray would've been watching through the blinds while deciding who was taking the garbage out tomorrow. 😅

📍 Filmed somewhere in the U.S.

⚠️ We definitely don't recommend opening your door for a bear. Please don't. 😅

Fort McMurray residents may be paying some of the highest grocery prices in Alberta.

Albertans already face the highest grocery costs among Canada's largest provinces, and Numbeo's cost of living data suggests groceries in Fort McMurray are roughly 15% more expensive than in Edmonton and Calgary.

The KOHO Grocery Gap Report found Albertans spend an average of $50.16 per grocery trip, the highest among Canada's largest provinces. Higher prices in Fort McMurray are often linked to transportation and distribution costs, along with limited retail competition in northern communities.

Have you noticed grocery prices increasing in Fort McMurray? What item has become the most expensive in your shopping cart?

Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith have signed two agreements to advance planning for major pipeline and railway projects aimed at strengthening trade and energy security.

The agreements include a feasibility study for the proposed 3,300-kilometre Northern Shield Energy Corridor, an east-west pipeline connecting Alberta to Ontario. The provinces will also study new railway links between northern Ontario’s Ring of Fire and western processing facilities and ports.

Provincial leaders say the pipeline could transport up to 500,000 barrels of oil per day for domestic use. The projects remain in the planning stage and would require further studies, regulatory approvals, and funding before construction could begin.

What are your thoughts on the proposed projects?
