Shoes for the dead
These shoes have belonged to the oldest of the women buried in the Oseberg ship. Three complete shoes were found in the Oseberg grave, and the remains of a fourth. It looks like both couples are made for the oldest woman. There is a big difference between the right and left shoes in both pairs, and it seems like they are adapted to her gouty and swollen feet. The best pair is sewn in fine, soft leather. The shoemaker has sewn together the upper leather and sole on the wrong side and then turned the shoe. The shoes from Oseberg are the same type as those found in the oldest medieval towns.

Sko til de døde
Disse skoene har tilhørt den eldste av kvinnene som ble begravet i Osebergskipet. I Osberggraven ble det funnet tre komplette sko, og rester av en fjerde. Det ser ut til at begge parene er sydd til den eldste kvinnen. Det er stor forskjell på høyre og venstre sko i begge par, og det stemmer godt med at de er tilpasset hennes giktiske og hovne føtter. Det beste skoparet er sydd i fint, mykt skinn, og vendsydd, Det vil si at skomakeren har sydd sammen overlær og såle på vrangen og vrengt skoen. Skoene fra Oseberg er samme type som de vi finner i de eldste middelalderbyene.
