I started bullet journaling when I was really sick. I had had to drop out of my master's program, move back in with my parents, and just generally felt overwhelmed. I discovered a few articles explaining the bullet journal system and after a few practice pages, cracked open a brand new journal and began to create my first daily page layout.

That was five years ago, my system has created over the years, and still continues to adapt to what I need at the time.

Pretty Sick Designs' Reflection Journal is based out a system I created for myself when I needed to find the positive in every day and wanted to take charge of my life instead of just letting it run its own course.
It is comprised of monthly and daily pages with no dates so you can set your own pace. The daily pages have AM and PM prompts that don't take long to fill out but allow you to take stock of what happened and seek to find the positives. The monthly pages have space for self-reflection, goal setting, and more. I absolutely love the system and recommend it to everyone, no matter what stage of life they are in.

I know I talk about it a lot, but one of my biggest recommendations for life in general, but especially for those living with chronic illness is to start journaling. More specifically, gratitude journaling.

On the days when I feel the worst, the physical pain can seep into my mind and bring everything down with it. Everything looks grey, bleak, and dismal. The last thing I want to do is remember such a terrible day.

But even though that's all I can see or feel, that isn't all there is. Guaranteed there is at least one thing to be thankful for, even if it is the day being over.

I try to write 3 things I am thankful for at the end of the pain. It is all about not letting the pain win. Not letting it completely take you over. Not letting it steal from you and lie to you. There is always some light to be found.

Aren't you glad you just kept swimming through 2020? ⁠

I don't know about you, but I'm sick of all the posts and emails celebrating the end to 2020 and encouraging everyone to erase the entire year from their memory. While I'm glad 2020 is over (who isn't?), reflecting on the past year, I see so many little graces and things to be thankful for. ⁠
I'm SO thankful for Marco Polo and other apps that help keep me in contact with my friends despite the distance. I am so grateful for my newly discovered love of puzzling (and its social acceptance and normalization). I'm thankful for twinkly lights, cosy blankets, and warm candles that make my apartment feel so much like home. I'm so thankful that Rob and I were able to get married in the mountains with our immediate family. ⁠
I could go on and on. But through chronic illness, I've learned to seek out the good, beautiful, and true even in the midst of pain, loss, and disappointment. I've found that no matter how small it is, there is always something to be thankful for! ⁠
I hope you can find some time to reflect on the past year and see some of the light that found its ways through the darkness of the past year. ⁠

I started Pretty Sick Designs after dropping out of university. I moved home and was too sick to work but needed something to do.

I got sick with Fibromyalgia and CFS when I was 13 years old.

Over 15 years later, I’m still sick and I know I’m not alone. There are so many amazing out there and even though they may look fine, they really aren’t.

I sell cosy sweatshirts, journals, jewellery, get well cards, and more. Each item is either something that has helped me in my health journey or something I hope will encourage and help someone just like you!
