Shonts’s historic wooden prairie grain elevator is more than 115yrs old! There once was 2 grain elevators at this location. The first was built in 1909 by Security Elevator Company of Winnipeg. It was sold to the Alberta Wheat Pool in 1947 and later relocated in 1967 to Heritage Park Historical Village in Calgary, where it operates as a museum piece. This one was also built between 1909 & 1910 for the Hannan and Carver Grain Company. It still stands, now alone, on the prairie at the original Shonts railway location.

An interesting fact about Shonts is that it never developed into a full town or municipality; it remained a railway siding point with the elevators and an on-site elevator agent rather than a populated community.

In 1921 Pioneer Grain Company built a 40 000 bushel elevator at Bardo.

A one lunger engine (10-15 horsepower one cylinder) provided the needed power to operate the elevator.

In 1929 the elevator was sold to Alberta Wheat Pool. They added a 35 000 bushel annex in 1940. This is the large wood building you see on the south side of the elevator in the photis. The annex, intended to be temporary was not built on a foundation.

The engine was upgraded to a four-cylinder continental engine in the 1960s.

On July 31, 1971 the Bardo elevator closed for business. In 1972, the elevator was sold again. This time to the Bardo Elevator Co-op who used it for about ten years.

Phill the current owner, who purchased the property almost two decades ago, does what he can to prolong the life of the elevator but it is falling into disrepair and needs a roof. He advised it will be 120k $ for a new roof and no one is willing to help as the elevator is “to far off the beaten path”. The Bardo grain elevator slowly continues to deteriorate like so many others throughout Alberta.

For years I read about this Hostel and wanted to take kiddo! Would have been so fun yo sleep in one of the 3 cabooses on...

For years I read about this Hostel and wanted to take kiddo! Would have been so fun yo sleep in one of the 3 cabooses on site! Sadly it was destroyed in the Bush Creek East wildfire on August 18, 2023. Only 1 caboose remains on site. I will post a video and more info soon.

The boardwalk was partially closed due to erosion over the winter and the storms that went through the area, but it's still such a beautiful walk. A great place to take a break while you're travelling stretch your legs and enjoy being out and surrounded by the green.
