I'll be a vendor here! This will be my third time and I have to say how good it feels to be surrounded by such amazing souls with such amazing talent. Being a part of Niska Noel brings me such a sense of peace.
Here's a little backstory:
My paternal grandmother was colonized. I had no idea at one time that we were indigenous. Growing up with dark skin in a pale skinned world was really difficult. Although my brother is white skinned with blond hair and blue eyes, I knew I was always the "different" one. I got bullied for being dark. Lots of teachers were automatically mean to me compared to the pale skinned kids. I never fully understood why...about all of the nonsense. Then in my mid 20's, I started doing research into our family tree on my dads side as we didn't have anything. Mom's grandmother was indigenous and we already had all of that info. I learned through that side that most of my family is Metis. So in digging around on Dad's side, I found a cousin and this cousin was the holder of all of the family wisdom. He had all of the information I was looking for. I learned I am a full status indigenous person. My main heritage is Musqueam Coast Salish from British Columbia Canada. Our ancestors lived on unceded lands. We were the protectors of the Fraser River and the lands around it (now Greater Vancouver) for 9000 years. We were quite lucky as our land remained ours.
So this all brings me to where I am today. I don't have my status yet as I've been afraid for years but being a part of something like this is a powerful feeling. To be among people who are "like me" has never felt so good.
