Gather
- The act of coming together.
I would love to finally introduce the name of my new collection, “Gather.” An entire collection made out of 1 knot, the gather knot. This new collection represents that although we are going through tough times during this pandemic, we can all remain hopeful that one day we will be able to gather again.
Growing up in a Filipino household, I was always surrounded by family - my blood-related family, ‘Canadian’ family and my church community. As immigrants, my parent’s left their families back home and were forced to find their own communities in Canada, who eventually became their support systems. Every weekend, we would have the stereotypical ‘Filipino’ gathering. Whether we were gathering with friends and family on a normal weekend or to watch an awaited Pacquiao boxing match. Our gatherings were filled with endless amounts of delicious homemade filipino foods, so much joy and laughter and of course karaoke.
Gathering with my friends and family was always a normal part of life and I never imagined a life without it. When the COVID-19 pandemic began, our freedom to gather was taken away for our own safety. It was a huge change adjusting from in-person gatherings to virtual. I would have never thought that I would be having a virtual graduation this year to celebrate 4 years of hard work. This change has helped me to realize how much I value the relationships that I do have. I hope that one day we will all be able to gather again with no restrictions, just like the old times.
