While most of my summer will be spent at swimming pools, splash pads, the beach, the zoo, hosting play dates , watching soccer games and cottaging with my family, Born Yesterday will be popping up at a handful of carefully selected markets along the way.

In between sunscreen, camp drop-offs, and beach days, I’ve been busy creating a collection of lightweight summer pieces while also making room in the studio for what’s next.

To help with that, I’ll be offering 20% off all quilted coats at my summer markets—a little thank you to those who come out and support small, local makers.

Sometimes I watch conversations like from this and wonder whether what I do at Born Yesterday even matters.

I rescue quilts, blankets, tablecloths, denim, and forgotten textiles from thrift stores, estate sales, and donation bins, giving them a second life instead of letting them end up in landfill. Yet when I look at the scale of the fashion industry’s impact on people and the planet, my efforts can feel almost insignificant. One coat. One kimono. One pair of jeans. What difference can that really make?

But maybe that’s the wrong question.

Perhaps the real change happens when more of us begin to rethink our relationship with clothing. When we mend instead of replace. Repair instead of discard. Reuse, swap, alter, thrift, and repurpose what already exists. No single person or small business can solve fashion’s waste problem alone, but collectively, those choices can start to make a dent.

Every garment kept in use a little longer is one less garment headed to landfill. Every repair is an act of resistance against a culture of disposability.

Tonight I joined for a fascinating talk by on tattoos, quilts, and ceramics as hidden records of history.

As someone who works with vintage quilts every day, I already know that when you wear one of my quilted coats, you’re wearing a story from the past. This talk reinforced that idea in a powerful way.

One of the themes Monique explored was our human need to leave a mark—to create something that says we lived, we loved, we belonged somewhere, and we were here. Tattoos, quilts, and ceramics become records of memory, identity, place, and human presence long after their makers are gone.

We also explored how quilt patterns such as the Log Cabin, Crossroads, Monkey Wrench, and Bow Tie have been interpreted as symbols of refuge, preparation, decision-making, and movement. Whether viewed as coded messages, cultural knowledge, or community storytelling, these patterns remind us that quilts can hold far more than warmth and beauty—they can carry memory, history, and meaning across generations.

A beautiful reminder that the things we make, wear, mend, and pass down often become the most enduring evidence of who we were. 🪡✨

What a day!

Domestic Nostalgia began as an idea inspired by vintage quilts, milk glass hues, and memories of home. Yesterday, it became a runway look, a live illustration, and a reminder of why I started Born Yesterday in the first place. Thank you for being my partner in crime yesterday đź’•
