🌊Berg Lake Trail🏔️

A few weeks back Nicole and I ✅ off another bucket-list adventure, completing the Berg Lake Trail in Mt. Robson Provincial Park.

After major flooding the trail had been close for a few years, reopening in 2025. The trail itself is 42km long with roughly 1200m of vertical gain, and the first 7km being bike accessible to Kinney Lake (we biked it to make the day a little easier) and the rest hike and run only.

The entire trail was beautiful, but what really stood out were the waterfalls:
📸1) Emperor Falls
2) Falls of the Pool
3) White Falls

Along with Berg Lake itself and the majestic Mount Robson, the highest peak in the 🇨🇦 Rockies at 3954 meters.

Our hopes was to camp, but alas we could not get sites (I tried booking opening day) and as is typical with our experience on backcountry trails, there were tons of open sites along the way.

Someday we will definitely be back to get the full camping experience, but the trail did not disappoint in the least.

🔥While Kwasitchewan Falls🌊 trail is currently closed due to wildfires, there have been a few in the area extinguished already.

There does not appear to be any damage to the trail at this point, so here is to hoping we get a beautiful fall season to get in the backcountry.

In the meantime, enjoy this little video and the rushing waters over Kwasitchewan Falls and 🤞🏼 y’all can get out there some day soon. Trust me, it’s worth it!

🚙Icefield Parkway🧊

The Icefield Parkway (HWY 93) is arguably one of the most scenic roads in the WORLD. It extends 227km from Lake Louise in Banff to Jasper through the 🇨🇦 Canadian Rockies.

We toured from Jasper down to Peyto Lake and back this week on our annual family 🏕️ trip, stopping at a number of STUNNING and world renown locations along the way. All of these hikes are beginner friendly but there are still some hills to climb!

The first spot was Mistaya Canyon which clearly put a smile on Lola’s face! The glacier carved canyon is a sight to behold. The trail itself was 1.25km with 60m of vert.

Stop number two was Tangle Falls, located right along the highway, almost zero hiking involved but a very beautiful cascading waterfall.

Stop number 3 was the world famous Columbia Icefields, the largest ice field in the Canadian Rockies. We opted to drive and park near the glacier and do a 1.6km hike with 60m of elevation gain to get a closer view. There are plenty of tour options like the skywalk and bus tours onto the glacier.

Our last stop was the oh so beautiful Peyto Lake one of the most photographed places in the Canadian Rockies. The water truly is that vibrant due to glacial silt. The hike itself is on paved paths (accessible) to a viewing platform. I clocked 1.8km with 85m of vert on our trek.

This is a pretty magical way to spend a day if visiting the mountains. The views from the drive itself is worth the trip!

🌊Kwasitchewan Falls Trail - Manitoba’s Crown Jewel of the Backcountry🏕️

For any avid and experienced adventurer, this is an absolute MUST DO trail. Two weekends ago Manitoba Parks cleared the trail of deadfall and conditions are the best I’ve ever experienced.

📍The trailhead is in Pisew Falls Provincial Park roughly 7 hours north of Winnipeg, Treaty No. 5.

The trail is arguably the most challenging in the province and can be completed as either a long day hike, or in our case on this trip a two day 🏕️ trip staying right beside the falls.

The trailhead sign is misleading, as the route done as a loop is closer to 29km as opposed to the 22km posted. I had 734m of vert and included Pisew Falls in our hike.

Recent work was done on the trail to the Rotary Bridge now with a smooth gravel path that is much more accessible than the old stairs/boardwalk.

The trail itself is a rugged, and undulating, with a mix of rocky Canadian Shield and roots everywhere. Outside of that there were STUNNING wildflowers galore (the wild roses were next level!) along with towering trees and mossy carpets along large stretches of the trail. 😍. Top this off with Manitoba’s two most powerful and majestic waterfalls at opposite ends of the trail and you end up with a perfect combination of both a beautiful journey and destination.

The Grass River side was less grown in than Phillips Lake, but both were essentially completely cleared of blowdown, which had not been the case with my prior trips here.

Not having to hurdle trees for hours actually allowed me to appreciate just how beautiful this place is. If the trail was brushed back I would go as far as saying it’s world class, right here in Manitoba.

As for camping there are two locations along the trail. One right at the falls with 3 areas to put up your ⛺️, along witj a privy. They were well sheltered and it was nice to watch sunrise over the falls the next morning!

There is also another area to camp slightly further up the trail towards the Grass River which also has a privy and fire pit that actually had wood stocked at it!

🌲Falcon Creek Trail🪨

This is a fun little 2.3km lollipop🍭 (out and back with a loop!) located near Falcon Lake! While it is quite short, the terrain is fairly rugged with lots of granite slabs and a few marshy spots with plenty of tree roots.

📸 No. 2 shows the huge boulder 🪨 that you will find along the way (with a couple of old dogs on it 😅)

The bridge in 1 and 3 are new this year and a big upgrade from what was there! #

Huge thank you to all the volunteer group that got out there and made this happen. It was a huge effort to make this happen and wildly impressive that it was done in such a short period of time.

The biggest shoutout to Aaron Webb who spearheaded this all starting by assessing the trail in the fall and presenting the information to Manitoba Parks, then organized the volunteer crews to get out there and do the work! Also pictures credit of Aaron.

With the wind storm across Manitoba Thursday and Friday, I was genuinely anxious about the amount of work and conditions of the trails with Suffer on Centennial coming up.

I sent out a request to see if anyone would be able to help over the long weekend. All I can say is I was overwhelmed by the response!

Over two days almost 100km of trail has been cleared of blowdown and the trails are in fine form.

Thanks so much to Travis, Tanis, Rick, Ryan, Mike, Cindy, Bill, Dave, and and everyone else that offered to help clean up the trails! Appreciate all of you!

🔥Mantario Trail Restoration Plan🌲

Manitoba Parks has released a plan to restore Mantario trail with hopes of it being reopened by this summer, with further cleanup and more extensive improvements to happen in the future.

As per Manitoba Parks:

“Once complete, the enhanced Mantario Trail will rival other iconic long-distance wilderness trails in Canada, such as British Columbia’s West Coast Trail, Ontario’s La Cloche Silhouette Trail, and Newfoundland’s East Coast Trail.”

“With its rugged terrain, remote lakes, and immersive
backcountry experience, Mantario will offer a uniquely Manitoban adventure for hikers seeking a
true wilderness challenge.”

The season for 🌸Prairie Crocus🌸 viewing is soon to be upon us!

The typical season the crocus is end of April to the beginning of May, with the plan preferring soil that drains well.

This brings us to the location we LOVE to check out the spring bloom, SPRUCE WOODS!🌲

Epinette/Cedar trails and Spirit Sands are both really picturesque places to take in the flowers, but far and away HOGSBACK has been our favorite to view these little gems 😍.

We will do our best to keep everyone updated when we do notice some significant blooms, but I wouldn’t be surprised if by this weekend they were starting.

Manitoba still unsure when or whether Mantario Trail will reopen in 2026.

Sections of 63-kilometre hiking trail burned in 2025 remain unsafe: Manitoba Parks

Almost a year after a forest fire scorched the Mantario Trail, provincial parks officials remain unsure whether Manitoba’s most popular distance-hiking trail will reopen in 2026.

Roughly half of the 63-kilometre trail was burned by the fire known as EA063, which began near Ingolf, Ont., in May 2025 before spreading into Manitoba’s Whiteshell Provincial Park.

The trail has now been closed for 11 months. Manitoba Parks has conducted what it calls “an initial assessment” of the fire damage.

“That work found that roughly half of the trail was affected to varying degrees, with some sections experiencing more significant impacts that have made the trail difficult to follow in places,” the province said in a statement it did not attribute to any official.

The damage “presents safety concerns” because of fire‑damaged and burned trees, the statement continued.

Dead trees are far more prone to falling than live trees and they render campsites unsafe.

The province did not say which campsites were damaged by fire and what sections of the trail suffered the most damage.

Initial work to make the trail safe for trail runners and hikers is expected to begin this summer, with tree removal and the placement of wayfinding signs, the province stated.

“Decisions on whether the trail will be open in part or in full for the 2026 season have not yet been made and will depend on safety considerations and the progress of this work,” the statement concluded.
