Recruiting isn’t only a talent decision.

It’s a risk decision.

A coach is quietly asking:

Can I coach her?
Can her teammates rely on her?
What happens when she fails in public?
Does one mistake become five—or can she reset and stay useful?

The athletes who separate themselves aren’t always mistake-free.

They’re the ones who can recover without unraveling.

And that isn’t something you either “have” or don’t.

It can be trained.

Follow for the human side of high performance—the confidence, emotional regulation and coachability that can change an athlete’s entire future.

There’s one question I can ask an athlete that tells me a LOT about how they’ve been taught to handle this game mentally.

Can you control whether or not you get a hit?

You can control your preparation.
Your approach.
Your effort.
Your swing.
Your response.

But you can hit a ball perfectly and have a shortstop make the play of her life.

That’s the game.

The goal isn’t teaching athletes how to control the outcome.

It’s teaching them how to control everything they can before, during and after it.

That’s where the mental game starts. 🥎

Mistakes don’t separate good players from great ones.

What happens next does.

The best athletes aren’t perfect. They reset. They make an adjustment. They compete through the next pitch instead of replaying the last one.

Every rep is feedback. Every swing is another opportunity to learn.

This athlete did exactly that —made an adjustment, trusted the process, and kept working. That’s where real growth happens.

At HBA, we don’t chase perfection.
We teach athletes how to respond.

Because games aren’t won by the player who never makes a mistake.
They’re won by the player who refuses to let one mistake define the next play.

One thing I hope every athlete learns from HBA:

Celebrate your wins.

Not because you’re finished, but because you earned them.

There will always be another goal to chase, another skill to improve, another season to prepare for. If you never stop to recognize your progress, you’ll always feel like you’re behind.

The work matters.
The progress matters.
And every win—big or small—is worth celebrating.
