This is Naran feeling our soft cashmere being carded in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia this summer.

Nomadic herders harvest cashmere fibres manually from their goats using metal combs, after which the fibres need to be scoured and carded. Although Mongolian herders commonly use manual processes to prepare coarser sheep and camel wool for felting or spinning, cashmere is always carded and spun by machine. This carding machine is processing white cashmere that has been pooled from several herder families. The spun yarn will be used for woven or machine-knit products.

We will be open during Doors Open Winnipeg, May 30 & 31! Zolzaya Cashmere is a small importer of sustainable wool and cashmere products from nomadic herders in Mongolia.

We will be showing scenes from an ethnographic film produced in Mongolia, celebrating the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists. Come chat with us about cashmere and nomadic life in the grasslands!
