Opening Ceremonies for the Manitoba Indigenous Summer Games in Sagkeeng First Nation. Watching my baby boy enter with the athletes, seeing our community group (Hollow Water) and all the amazing representation that we shared the space with. Athlete Pat Bruyere, there were 6 runners that were selected to run the Pan American Games Torch from Minneapolis to Winnipeg. And when the athletes got to the Winnipeg Stadium, these strong Indigenous athletes had the torch taken from them. People who were not part of this remarkable historic event, were given the torch to bring into the Arena. Can you believe that? Well, it happened. Pat was 20 at the time, the elder of the group he says. The youngest was 16 years old, who was also Elijah Harper’s brother. 5 out of 6 of these young athletes were residential school survivors.
