🦃 Even Turkeys Needed a Little Foot Help! 👣
Before railroads became the main way to transport livestock, turkeys and geese were walked to market to be sold for Thanksgiving and Christmas feasts. Farmers would lead large flocks along country roads toward the cities, sometimes covering hundreds of miles on foot.
Turkeys’ feet weren’t exactly built for long-distance walking, so sore feet and injuries became a major concern as they made their way to market. Farmers came up with some creative solutions, fitting the tired birds with boots made from sacking or leather—not exactly convenient, but they did the trick!
Along certain routes, farmers also developed tar-and-sand “shoe” pits. The turkeys were herded through shallow pools of warm tar and then into sand. The sand stuck to the tar, creating a gritty protective coating around their feet—giving the flock their very own set of shoes!
Luckily, we have it a little easier today. With the right footwear, insoles, and orthotics, we can give our feet the support they need for any journey.
This Thanksgiving, be thankful for comfortable shoes and that you’re not walking to market with the flock! 🍂👟
And don't forget we're open 11-4pm!
Happy Thanksgiving!🩷
