In Memory of Heinz Stücke (1940–2026)
Yesterday, on the 22 of July, legendary German cyclist and world traveler Heinz Stücke passed away at the age of 86.
In 1962 at just 22 years old, Heinz left his hometown in Germany on a simple three-speed bicycle.
Over the next more than 50 years, he cycled over 600,000 kilometers, visited 195 countries and 78 territories and earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the person who had traveled more extensively by bicycle than anyone else.
Through his journey Heinz survived being hit by a truck in the Atacama Desert, beaten unconscious by soldiers in Egypt, shot in the foot in Zambia, detained in Cameroon, robbed multiple times and countless other hardships.
To finance his travels, he sold his own photographs, postcards, and travel booklets along the way.
Heinz inspired generations of travelers to slow down and observe the life around at its pace.
Thank you, Heinz for being the greatest inspiration for all the adventureres around the world.
