I don’t always like talking about this date — 21st August 1986.

On this particular day in 1986, my family suffered an unimaginable tragedy. We lost more than 30 members of our family — from my grandmother to aunts, uncles, nieces, cousins and other loved ones.

The Lake Nyos disaster left a scar in our hearts that time can never completely erase. When my mother later gave birth to me, I was nicknamed “There Is Nobody in Nyos” — a painful reminder of how deeply that tragedy affected my family.

Today, 40 years later, we remember those we lost. 🕊️

May the souls of all the victims of the Lake Nyos disaster continue to rest in peace. And may their families forever find strength and comfort.
