Arakhne * Artistry of Weaving *

https://linktr.ee/Arakhne I employ all kinds of materials in my work in order to achieve the most beautiful textures.

In my experimental style where bold and vibrant colours make captivating contrasts I explore the texture by often redefining the pattern and fusing other hand crafts with weaving in order to achieve the unique art piece.

Woven with grass and Maurice Brassard yarn for Berliner Webstuehle. For this second variation of a wall decor I chose to grass which grew in my yard as a main material. The stems are quite long and thin with some elasticity to it even in its dry state.

Long stems are woven in a pattern with its ends sticking out from one side.

I wove this decorative piece by first weaving the separate fringes in saori style, which is a Japanese freestyle weaving technique and then I started weaving the pattern Sedushak variation 1, which I found online few yrs back. It is a type of a miniature pattern, twill with short overshot.

The material I used mostly consists of cotton and bamboo of which most is Maurice Brassard Tencel Yarn Ne 8/2 - T8022, T5229, Maurice Brassard Bamboo Garn 8/2 - BB8021, BB8022, BB8026 and Maurice Brassard Baumwolle Garn Ne 8/2 963.
In addition to these I've added several other cotton yarn types such as few with lamé in it.

For this project I've had a very special yarn to work with, that of the brand Maurice Brassard. In collaboration with I chose several colours of Bamboo and cotton from the huge range of types and shades of Maurice Brassard which can be found on their website.

I chose Maurice Brassard Tencel Yarn Ne 8/2 - T8022, T5229, Maurice Brassard Bamboo Garn 8/2 - BB8021, BB8022, BB8026 and Maurice Brassard Baumwolle Garn Ne 8/2 963.
In addition to these I've added several other cotton yarn types such as few with lamé in it.

Finding the right pattern was a real trick because I wanted something unique and after a long search I've settled on a pattern I once saw (and luckily saved) in one of the fb groups for weaving and to be honest haven't been able to find anything about it online under the title "Sedushak variation 1", so it's indeed very lucky. It is a 4 shaft draft and in my opinion and it is a type a miniature pattern, twill with a short overshot form.

I've arranged the photos in the order of my creative process - winding and creating the warp, dressing the loom by winding the warp onto the back beam, threading and tying after which, finally, comes weaving.

After a long period of dreamweaving & visualizing I've created this piece which consists of several different materials as well as few handcraft techniques such as 4shaft weaving, saori weaving, braiding, cording, twisting, sewing...

This piece embodies such themes like soulsearching, dreaming, embellishing, praising the nature and it's forces.

Not so long ago I'd reached out to in my quest for connecting with other artists/ studios and I'd proposed a little collaboration. Berliner Webstühle is a German weaving studio offering weaving courses, looms, yarn and all the necessary accessories. In my communication with Martin who is one of the staff, I've settled on the idea and he kindly helped me find the choice of Maurice Brassard yarn from their huge selection and I had them sent to me. I was to weave something out of their material and send it back as an exchange.

The process of creating this item took it's time, like a seed which needs to germinate in order to sprout, long but very satisfying. The result is a wall decor item which has thoughts, ideas, techniques, communication & aspirations all woven into it. I am very pleased with it and I hope Berliner Webstühle studio will be as well 🙏😌

𖥔 🪩 ݁ ˖ Another batch of gorgeous yarn my plate from around the world into my atelier.

The first one is from China, a cotton thread twisted by a lamé thin ribbon in aqua mermaid, shifting from purple, blue and green. 💙💜💚 It is incredibly beautiful in person and I've already used it on wind chimes I've made recently.

The next is a batch from Holland and it was thrifted by a friend in a charity shop. A bit coarser wool in various shades, I suppose it's good for tapestry, bags, coverlets, still a good amount for a very low price! 💙💜

Last two types of yarn also come from China and both are effective mohair type of yarn. First is a knitted mohair thread in pale blue, green, pink and orange blots with a silver lamé thread.🩷🤍 The second is a orange, green, pink mohair with a white thread with puffs in it. I don't particularly like the white bits but I'm sure it'll fit right in. 💚🧡💗

I've pondered on the form of these wind chimes for quite a while and I've finally got it. Primarily I had wanted a much more complex version with decorative ropes & cords interconnected but decided and smaller and simpler forms.

These are made out of empty snail shells which I had collected over the years, washed them and made holes in them. Whether the snails leave them or die I'm not sure but I find empty ones in the corners of my yard. Sometimes they are grimy and full of dirt, brownish or white. When they clink against each other they make a lovely sound. 🐌

Other important materials include river washed branches, various glass beads, rope, recycled textiles and various types of yarn.

Dimensions for both pieces are similar 70 / 78 cm height, branch width 33 / 37cm, weight 293 / 303 grams.

Price for each piece is €150 with shipping included.

I can't tell you how much I wanted holographic yarn. The choice was immense but I had to restrain myself cuz money doesn't grow on trees 😅😭 I ordered it from China and it took about a month to arrive.

🩵 This aqua thread is just soooo gorgeous in real life. It shifts colours in such a way that it really is difficult to catch through photos. From place blue, to purple to greenish hue. Anyway, it's a cotton thread which is wrapped in a thin holographic nylon material.

🤍 Another holigraphic thread, this time very reminiscent of something that Barbie would wear. Pearl white with a pink sheen.

𖥔 🪩 ݁ ˖ The third type of yarn is a short eyelash nylon thread. It is very thin and appears white but as you move it it reflects light in pink, blue and green hues. It is so mesmerizing to look at.

💙 The last type of yarn I got is a very thin mohair. It is difficult to explain what colour it is exactly. The mohair thread is gray with hues of orange and pink spots and the thread is actually knitted in with an electric blue lamé. It shimmers nicely.

Can't wait to use all these! 😌✨

Although I've used this draft before it's the first time for me sticking to the book 🤭 Usually I edit the drafts but this time I am not going wild with textures and colours.

The draft is called Gertrude's Fancy, Kentucky coverlets for old linens, Tate's Lou No. 64. I am weaving a lap blanket and I've used the maximum width of my loom which makes me feels rather awkward, 1. 20 m, having my threads beings stuck on every edge of the loom and my shoulders hurt as the weaving progresses rather slow 😭😂

The yarn is Spendobene sport by Tropical Lane and it is a mix of 47% wool & 53% acrylic with some elasticity to it. As I wound the warp I made it as loose as possible and when I got it off the frame it shrinked a bit. In order for me to be able to weave well I tightened the tension of the warp just so and I hope that once it's off the loom it won't get messed up. I am using tabby in the pattern of pure cotton to give the textile some structure. I don't plant to machine wash it nor do I recommend any of my creations to be machine washed (handwashing in cold water and mild detergents only) anyway, so some drastic shrinkage should not be the result in the end but I guess I'll see.
