For years, many low-value shipments entered the EU with minimal customs procedures. That has now changed.
The EU has introduced new customs rules for imports from non-EU countries, including the removal of the customs exemption for low-value shipments. The goal is to create fairer competition and better control over the rapidly growing number of small parcels entering Europe through international e-commerce platforms such as Temu and SHEIN.
What does this mean for the textile industry?
Many textile developments begin with sample shipments. Fabrics, colours, fits and finishes need to be approved before production starts. Since these shipments now have to go through the customs process, paperwork and inspections have increased. Even small delays at customs can slow down product development, postpone production schedules and extend delivery times.
The new rules may also lead to higher administrative and import costs, which could eventually be reflected in product prices. This makes efficient planning, reliable logistics and strong manufacturing partnerships more important than ever.
