Hand embroidery on my daughter’s sweater

Geese leave in October without being told. They just know the way, and they fly it together.

Five of them, stitched by hand onto black linen. Each one thread-painted in brown, cream and sage, feather by feather, with a touch of ochre on the beak. A brass kiss-lock frame, a long chain, enough room for keys, a lip balm and a few coins.

This one is mine to keep. Only ever one.

The first mittens are the ones nobody remembers wearing, and everybody remembers seeing.

A bee on one hand, a sleepy bear on the other. Both needle-felted by hand, straight into the wool, fibre by fibre: yellow and black stripes, soft white wings, pink cheeks, one closed eye. Tiny thumbless mittens on a string, so neither of them gets lost on the way to the park.

Only ever one pair.

There comes a day when the small shoes by the door start to look like the big ones.

Four Wildling barefoot shoes — two big, two small — each with a fox stitched by hand into green corduroy. The fur is thread painting: rust, ochre and white laid one over another, across every ridge of the cord. A lavender arc around each fox. Three lilac flowers above it, right where it’s looking.

One set, for a grown-up and a little one. Only ever one.
