Natural materials are often described as renewable - but what does that actually mean?

A renewable material is one that can regenerate naturally over time. Wool regrows each year, timber can be sourced from responsibly managed forests, and fibres such as h**p, flax and cotton can be replanted season after season.

Unlike synthetic materials, which are derived from finite fossil fuels, renewable natural materials are part of living cycles. When managed responsibly, they can be grown, harvested and replenished with minimal long-term depletion of resources.

As designers, the materials we choose shape not only the products we create, but the systems we support. Understanding where materials come from is the first step towards designing with greater responsibility.

In Sentinels, Comité de Proyectos explores the idea of care through material, craft and making.

Natural materials including handwoven rattan, wood and henequen fibre are brought together in a collection that celebrates attention, patience and interdependence. The rattan weave becomes both a material choice and a metaphor for social connection, while handcrafted textures and detailing honour the hands behind each piece.

The result is a collection that reminds us that durability is not only about how long an object lasts, but the care embedded within its creation.

Researchers at Aalto University transformed salvaged timber from the 17th-century Hahtiperä shipwreck into textile fibre, spinning it into yarn and knitting it into a seamless, zero-waste dress.

Using the university's Ioncell® process, the centuries-old wood was converted into a high-performance fibre produced without dyes or bleaching. The dress takes its rich brown colour directly from the shipwreck itself.

The project demonstrates the remarkable versatility of natural and bio-based materials. A resource once destined for disposal has been reimagined through science, design and craftsmanship, proving that innovation doesn't always require new materials - sometimes it starts with rethinking the value of what already exists.

The Tufting Chair Collection by Vintola Studio reimagines a centuries-old craft through a contemporary design lens.

Hand-tufted in wool, each chair combines a rich tactile surface with bold sculptural form, transforming a traditional textile technique into a striking statement piece. The collection demonstrates how natural materials and craft knowledge can evolve while retaining their cultural significance.

Its creation feels particularly timely. In 2024, Polish knitting was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognising one of Central Europe's oldest living crafts. Rather than treating tradition as something fixed in the past, Vintola Studio presents it as a living design language - one that can be reinterpreted, adapted and carried forward through contemporary design.
