Authorities reported that a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed ran a red light and collided with Officer Muhlbauer's patrol vehicle at the intersection of East Truman Road and Benton Boulevard. The impact caused the patrol vehicle to roll over. K9 Champ and a pedestrian d*ied at the scene, while Officer Muhlbauer later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.

The driver was taken into custody following the crash and later faced criminal charges. Court records show the driver subsequently pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree involuntary manslaughter related to the incident.

Muhlbauer served with the Kansas City Police Department for 20 years and was respected for his commitment to public service. He is survived by his wife and child. Serving as a Marine sniper at Hamid Karzai International Airport, Vargas-Andrews was among the service members helping secure the evacuation operation. During the attack, an ISIS-K su***de bomber detonated explosives in a crowded area near Abbey Gate, killing 13 U.S. service members and many Afghan civilians while injuring countless others.

Vargas-Andrews survived the blast but suffered catastrophic injuries, reportedly losing his right arm and left leg. In the years that followed, he underwent numerous surgeries and lengthy rehabilitation while continuing to share his experiences and honor those who did not return home.

Today, his story serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by service members during combat and contingency operations.
