The fashion industry, often associated with dazzling storefronts and tempting prices, hides a troubling reality. Every year, over 100 billion clothing pieces are produced—far exceeding global demand. Around 85% of these end up in landfills or incinerated, often after little to no use, perpetuating an unsustainable cycle that harms the planet.
Fast fashion comes at a high cost, both socially and environmentally. In countries like Bangladesh and India, millions of workers endure unsafe conditions and long hours, earning wages that barely sustain them. Despite global efforts to curb unethical practices, the pressure for cheap, fast production allows them to persist in certain regions.
Environmentally, fast fashion is a major culprit. Producing just one pair of jeans can consume up to 10,000 liters of water—equivalent to a person’s drinking supply for years. Synthetic fabrics like polyester shed microplastics during washing, polluting oceans and entering the food chain. Textile dyeing alone contributes to 20% of global industrial water pollution. Annually, about 500,000 tons of microfibers are released into the oceans, further damaging marine ecosystems.
In the U.S., over 11 million tons of textiles end up in landfills each year, where they release greenhouse gases and take centuries to decompose. This waste-filled cycle underscores the urgent need for change.
