Impulse control isn’t about “shutting your dog down.” It’s about teaching smooth state changes: ramp up, pause, and come down — through play.

What actually works at home and on walks:

Traffic Lights (green‑yellow‑red): rhythm → pause → rhythm. Reward the transitions, not rigid stillness.
1‑2‑3 Treat + nose target: the count adds predictability; the target is a gentle “handle” to arc away before triggers.
Tug with rules: short ON, short OFF, voluntary release, then back to play. High arousal, clean brakes.
Sniffing and a mat station: nose on = heart rate down; the mat is a portable pause button.

Gold checks:

If your dog “won’t take food,” you’re too close or too fast. Add distance, add a pattern.
Track recovery, not exhaustion: how quickly do they return to soft body, sniffing, and connection?
Less “hold it,” more “I help you switch gears.” Ethics = effectiveness.

Leash reactivity isn’t “bad behavior.” It’s a nervous system asking for distance, predictability, and kinder setups.

In 2025 city life throws scooters, tight sidewalks, sudden runners, and starey dogs at our pups. The fix isn’t forcing “heel through it.” It’s smart handling:

Distance is your gold currency. If your dog won’t take food, add meters and curve your path.
Spot the triggers: frontal eye contact from dogs, fast approaches, wheels, narrow corridors.
Use pattern games: Look → back to you, 1‑2‑3 treat rhythm, hand target, and scatter “find it” to switch into sniff mode.
Gear that helps: Y‑harness, 2–5 m leash, low hands, calm arcs, soft U‑turns.
Aim for green-zone learning: soft body, nose down, snack-ready, quick recovery.
