"I am a sieve through which the sun streams.”

Irmeli Kukkapuro – Portals is the first book of Irmeli Kukkapuro’s art.
Edited by Päivi Helander and Ida Kukkapuro, the book offers a journey into Irmeli Kukkapuro’s previously largely unknown world. It includes a substantial article by art historian PhD Asta Kihlman, who provides an overview of the developments that have shaped Kukkapuro’s work. In addition to graphic prints, drawings the book presents photographs of over 320 objects found on the shelf in the artist’s corner at Studio Kukkapuro – from essential tools and materials to artifacts of inspiration and memory.

Finnish Irmeli Kukkapuro (1934–2022) was a versatile artist. From early ink works she moved on to lithography, woodcuts and large abstractions, object compositions and, in the late period, paintings and collages. The themes she explored in her works were gender, form, space and color. The artist herself described the creative process as "breathing in and breathing out".

Irmeli Kukkapuro – Portals is published in April 2026 by Garrett Publishing.

Posters designed for Yrjö Kukkapuro by Tapani Aartomaa (1934–2009), an award-winning and internationally known Finnish graphic designer.

The duo's most famous collaborative project was called "Tattooed chairs", i.e. different chairs designed by Kukkapuro and decorated with Aartomaa graphics, which they created together between 1991 and 2009.

The Alnus Poster was created by Aartomaa in 1993 and only after that did Kukkapuro begin turning it into a chair. Completed with colourful, laminated legs, the corresponding chair is a rare collector's item that was only manufactured as a limited edition of 39 pieces.
The relaunched Alnus Poster is part of a fundraising campaign aiming to develop Irmeli and Yrjö Kukkapuro's studio in Kauniainen, Finland, into a museum. Only a limited batch of 250 posters is available.

🕊
Designer and professor Yrjö Kukkapuro died on February 8, 2025, at his home in Kauniainen. He was 91 years old.

Kukkapuro's long career in design spanned over 70 years. Almost every Finn has sat on a chair he designed–at a metro station, in a bank, at school, or in a library. Yrjö Kukkapuro focused on public space furniture and office chairs, but their comfort made them well-suitable for homes.

Yrjö Kukkapuro never stopped designing and coming up with new ideas. Until the very end, he pondered a concept of his new chair, the plan of which was clear in his mind. His assistant didn't have time to make drawings of the chair.

“I created the postmodern Experiment collection for the Milan fair of 1982, which I consider to be the greatest success of my career.
When I initially heard about the possibility that Hem would relaunch the chair, my first thought was: ‘It feels good to be back in Sweden again’. Now I understand that this means more than that: the whole world will be home to Experiment once more,” said Yrjö.

The Experiment is now available via hem.com.

In 1982 Yrjö Kukkapuro underwent a self-described ‘postmodern explosion’ – an eruption of creativity that resulted in one of the most important and influential designs of his career: the Experiment Chair. Bold and expressive, the Experiment Chair was first produced in 1984 and swiftly became an icon of 1980s design, enjoying a decade of global
success until production ceased in 1995.

The Experiment Chair will be available to order at hem.com starting on tomorrow, October 16, 2024!
