Rei Kawakubo & Macoto Takahashi collaboration…

Macoto Takahashi is a legendary Japanese illustrator who helped shape the look of modern “shojo” (girls’) manga with his signature romantic style, featuring characters with massive, glittering, starry eyes framed by flowers. In 2018, Comme des Garçons brought his artwork to life on the runway for their Spring/Summer collection. Rei Kawakubo contrasted the sweet innocence of Takahashi’s retro anime girls with bold, oversized, and sculptural clothing.

Belgian designer Stan Peeters is one of the finalists of this year’s ITS Contest in Trieste, an international platform dedicated to discovering and supporting emerging fashion talent.

We recently visited ITS Arcademy where the exhibition presents the 10 finalists of this edition, alongside selected works from previous editions.

Peeters is a standout graduate of the world-renowned Fashion Department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp.

The collaboration between Yohji Yamamoto and Ryuichi Sakamoto represents one of the most significant intersections between avant-garde fashion and contemporary music.

Sakamoto composed music for several of Yamamoto’s runway presentations, particularly during the 1990s, creating soundscapes that accompanied Yamamoto’s deconstructed silhouettes, monochromatic collections, and unconventional approach to beauty.

Both artists shared a fascination with experimentation and a rejection of traditional boundaries. Yamamoto transformed fashion through asymmetry, volume, and movement, while Sakamoto combined classical composition, electronic music, and ambient sound.

It extends beyond garments to include tattoos, prosthetics, cosmetic interventions, digital identities, biotechnology, wearable technologies, and every practice that reshapes how the body is perceived, experienced, and represented.

Today, the body itself has become fashion’s primary site of creation. Fashion is no longer merely about dressing the body—it is about designing, modifying, and questioning what the body can become. It is a cultural language through which technology, politics, identity, art, and biology converge.
