The Cyanotype Process: Foraged from the land around us, objects like leaves, flowers, lichens or feathers are placed on the fabric. These block the light during exposure to UV light.

As the Hebridean sun shines – often soft and unpredictable, yet capable of casting a crisp light over the landscape – the fabric undergoes a chemical transformation. The exposed areas turn into a rich, deep blue, while the unexposed sections retain their original colour, creating striking silhouettes of the objects.

The Cyanotype Process, featured throughout our apparel collection is a fascinating blend of art and science. Light, chemistry, and time come together to create a unique image, using the power of the sun. at LUMEN, we handprint our Cyanotype panels here at the workshop from start to finish.
The process begins with a cotton-canvas fabric coated in a light-sensitive solution made from ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide.

LUMEN | Visit Us

The LUMEN workroom is available to visit. Here you'll discover where every item is made from scratch, from rolls of Harris Tweed to the hand-printing of all our Cyanotypes.
You'll find us at the creative space of Island Darkroom, in the village of Achmore on the Isle of Lewis.

Opening Hours: Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm.

If you stop in at the LUMEN workroom on the Isle of Lewis, you'll discover a variety of one-off combinations and colours that you won't find on the website. Here are a couple of examples of Harris Tweed and Cyanotype cushion covers available in-store.

- 100% Pure Wool Harris Tweed & cotton-canvas print
- 43cm x 43cm cushion insert required (not included)
- Each Cyanotype pattern by the nature of the process will be unique

Q: Will unisex sizing differ from my usual size?
A: It could - especially for mens sizes, LUMEN unisex sizing tends to run smaller than standard. So for example, you may usually wear a medium but will be a LUMEN Large. But don't worry - check our detailed Size Guide to get the perfect fit for you, or please get in touch via our Contact page.
