✨ A Little Reality Behind the Paint ✨
Most people see me as “the window painter”, “the face painter”, or the one who volunteers to run fun sensory events for the community. And I absolutely love being that person.
But I don’t think many people see the reality behind it.
This was something I dreamed of turning into a full-time business. After all — there’s always a birthday party, always a business with windows to paint, always community events to be part of… right?
What people don’t see is:
• The hours every single week spent reaching out to businesses
• The constant replying to enquiries and messages
• The searching and applying for funding
• The planning, designing, prepping and admin
And the truth is — I’ve never received funding from anyone other than myself.
It’s easy to think, “Well whatever you earn you can just buy more supplies.”
But the reality is, sometimes I haven’t taken a single penny for myself. It goes straight back into paint, brushes, insurance, stall fees, petrol.
Pop-up stalls can cost £30. That means I need to paint at least 10 children just to cover that space — before I even make anything. Some events, I just about break even.
A window painting might take me over an hour and earn £40. By the time I’ve factored in fuel, materials and time… there’s very little left.
I’m not sharing this for sympathy. I’m sharing it because small creative businesses survive on community support.
If you’ve ever thought about booking a local artist… do it.
If you see a small business post… share it.
If you’re choosing between big companies and local creatives… consider giving the small one a chance.
Every booking, every share, every recommendation genuinely makes a difference.
Thank you to everyone who already supports me — it means more than you know 💛
